Isiolo Governor Abdi Guyo Impeached After Intense Political Wrangles
Isiolo Governor Abdi Guyo has officially been impeached, just under two weeks after a motion seeking his removal was tabled in the County Assembly over alleged misconduct and abuse of office.
The impeachment was confirmed on Thursday, June 26, following a decisive vote by members of the Isiolo County Assembly. Out of the 18 Members of County Assembly (MCAs) present, 16 voted in favour of removing the governor from office, marking a major political shift in the region.
Earlier in the day, members of the public participated in a public engagement session where opinions were sharply divided on whether the governor deserved to be impeached. A section of Isiolo residents came out strongly against the motion, accusing County Assembly Speaker Mohamed Roba of coercing MCAs to support the ouster.
These residents expressed their dissatisfaction by threatening to recall some of their elected representatives, insisting that such leaders must remain neutral and not take sides in politically charged processes.
Meanwhile, residents who supported the impeachment accused Governor Guyo of running a dysfunctional administration, one riddled with persistent internal conflicts.
They argued that his leadership had failed the people of Isiolo and called for new leadership to bring about meaningful change and restore confidence in county governance.
Governor Guyo’s time in office has been surrounded by numerous controversies. Some of the issues date back to 2024, when serious concerns were raised about how county funds were being managed.
These concerns brought him into conflict with national oversight bodies that questioned the accountability and transparency of his administration.
One of the most serious allegations involved his failure to respond to two summonses from the Senate Standing Committee on Health.
On June 10, Guyo was expected to appear before the committee to explain the state of healthcare services in Isiolo, but he failed to honour the invitations. This sparked widespread criticism, especially considering the critical health challenges facing the county.
Another major concern during his tenure was the hiring of 36 advisors, even though the law allows for only four. The Senate County Public Accounts Committee, led by Homa Bay Senator Moses Kajwang, flagged the move as a misuse of public funds.
The committee argued that the hiring was not only irregular but also reflected poor leadership and wasteful spending by the county government.
Since the impeachment motion was introduced, political tensions in Isiolo have intensified, with divisions emerging even within the County Assembly itself. Some MCAs who supported the motion reported feeling unsafe, citing threats and intimidation.
The situation worsened when the High Court temporarily halted the impeachment process, allowing time to hear a legal challenge against the motion.
Adding to the drama, the impeachment vote almost didn’t happen after Speaker Roba was arrested earlier in the week. He was later released on bond and accused Governor Guyo of orchestrating his arrest in an attempt to delay or block the vote.
As of now, Governor Guyo still has legal options available to challenge his impeachment. According to Kenyan law, a governor who has been impeached can seek redress in court if they believe that the impeachment process was unconstitutional or if proper procedures were not followed.
The political future of Isiolo remains uncertain as the county waits to see whether Guyo will go to court or whether the Senate will uphold the decision made by the County Assembly. Either way, the coming days are likely to shape the next phase of leadership in Isiolo.
