Human rights group Amnesty Kenya is calling for the immediate release of blogger and activist Ndiangui Kinyagia, who disappeared under alarming circumstances on Saturday, June 21.
His family and supporters say he was taken during a late-night raid on his home in Kinoo, and he has not been seen or heard from since.
Six days after his disappearance, pressure is growing on security authorities to provide answers. Amnesty Kenya strongly believes that officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) are responsible for Kinyagia’s abduction.
The organization is urging the government to either release him or present him in court if he is suspected of any wrongdoing, rather than detaining him without any communication.
“Free Ndiangui Kinyagia. He was last seen on June 21 after what was reported as a raid by DCI officers at his home in Kinoo. We demand his immediate release.
If there are any allegations against him, let him be brought before a judge—not held secretly and unlawfully,” Amnesty Kenya stated in a public appeal.
Family members of the 31-year-old blogger say that he disappeared under mysterious and worrying conditions. Kinyagia, an experienced IT specialist and outspoken voice on social media, vanished after a group of men believed to be DCI officers surrounded his residential compound.
Witnesses say several unmarked vehicles arrived and remained stationed outside his apartment block for almost nine hours before the men forcefully entered his home.
His relatives say they reported the incident at the Kinoo police station, but officers there denied any knowledge of the operation or his whereabouts. That denial has only deepened fears that the authorities are hiding information.
Prominent activist Boniface Mwangi has voiced grave concerns about the situation, suggesting that Kinyagia might be held by the National Intelligence Service (NIS), where he could be experiencing torture.
“This young man is likely being detained and tortured in a secret facility operated by the NIS and DCI,” Mwangi claimed. He added that Kinyagia’s disappearance is part of a wider pattern of silencing the youth and punishing those who dare speak out.
Kinyagia had gained attention as the mind behind a viral protest schedule shared widely online. The timetable outlined the planned events and timelines for the anti-government demonstrations held on Wednesday, June 25.
However, despite being the key figure behind the organizing effort, Kinyagia did not attend the protests. That same week, he vanished, reportedly taken by force.
The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has also joined the call for accountability. LSK President Faith Odhiambo condemned the incident, warning that such disappearances represent a serious threat to constitutional freedoms.
She stated that the LSK is preparing to file a court petition compelling the police to produce Kinyagia in court and to explain the legal basis for the raid on his residence.
With every passing day, the pressure continues to grow on law enforcement to provide truthful answers about Kinyagia’s fate.
His family, civil rights groups, and fellow activists are demanding transparency, justice, and the protection of basic human rights for all citizens—especially those who use their voices to demand change.
