Two police officers tragically lost their lives in a shocking shooting incident that took place early in the morning at Ng’iya Police Post in Siaya County.
The incident, believed to have been triggered by a disagreement, is now under intense investigation by authorities.
Gem Yala Sub-County Police Commander Charles Wafula confirmed the disturbing event, stating that it occurred around 6am.
According to his report, Constable Martin Mwendwa armed himself with a G3 rifle and went directly to the house of his superior, Corporal Chesise, who was the officer in charge of the police station. Without warning, Mwendwa opened fire, shooting Corporal Chesise in the chest and arms, fatally injuring him.
After committing the shocking act, Constable Mwendwa attempted to flee the scene. Reports indicate that he made his way toward Ng’iya Girls’ High School, possibly trying to escape into hiding. However, fellow officers quickly tracked him down.
In a tense confrontation, the fleeing officer was gunned down after reportedly firing several warning shots into the air to scare off those pursuing him.
Police Commander Wafula stated that investigations are currently focused on establishing the motive behind the fatal shooting.
Authorities are considering the possibility that the officer may have had a personal disagreement with his boss or may have been suffering from mental health issues, which have increasingly become a concern within the police service.
Both bodies have since been transferred to the Siaya County Referral Hospital mortuary for postmortem examinations.
This incident adds to a growing list of worrying internal shootings within the police force, raising concerns about the mental well-being and working conditions of officers in the country.
Earlier this year in February, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) launched a probe into another troubling case involving police officers.
In that incident, one officer allegedly shot and killed his colleague in Nairobi. The fatal shooting occurred during the early morning hours of Sunday, February 23, in the Ruaraka area.
A police report seen by Newshub.co.ke revealed that the two officers had just left an entertainment venue when a quarrel broke out between them.
The officer who lost his life was attached to the General Service Unit (GSU) and was reportedly in the company of his brother during the argument that turned deadly.
Another recent case unfolded on the evening of Sunday, March 9, when a police officer from Gigiri Police Station allegedly opened fire on his fellow officers.
According to preliminary reports, the officer was intoxicated at the time of the incident and began shooting inside the station’s canteen. This reckless act resulted in the death of one officer and left another injured.
These repeated incidents point to a worrying trend of violence within the disciplined forces, raising urgent questions about stress levels, access to mental health care, and conflict resolution mechanisms among police officers.
Authorities have promised thorough investigations into each case, but the growing number of such tragedies highlights the need for immediate reforms and mental health support within the police service.
