Githunguri Member of Parliament Gathoni Wamuchomba, who is widely recognized as a close ally of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, has thrown her support behind former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i for the presidency.
Wamuchomba made the unexpected endorsement on Sunday, June 29, while attending a church service at the PCEA Thika Town Church in Kiambu County. She was present at the event alongside Matiang’i and other high-profile dignitaries.
During the service, Wamuchomba openly praised Matiang’i, stating that she believed he was destined to become Kenya’s next Head of State.
“Because I have the gift of foresight, I can confidently say that we are in the presence of the next president of the Republic of Kenya,” she boldly declared. Her remarks were met with loud applause and cheers from the church congregation.
Speaking to the media outside the church after the service, Wamuchomba doubled down on her endorsement. She repeatedly referred to Matiang’i as “His Excellency,” further emphasizing her belief that he is the right person to take over the presidency.
While addressing the recent tensions between the government and Kenyan youth—especially the Gen-Z movement that has been at the center of protests—Wamuchomba echoed Matiang’i’s calls for peace and dialogue. “As His Excellency has said, we need to sit down and talk.
Teargas, guns, and blame games will not solve our issues. The government must be ready to engage in dialogue with the youth,” she stated.
After the church event, Wamuchomba joined Matiang’i and several Members of County Assembly (MCAs) for lunch. Together, they mingled with local residents in Thika Town, strengthening their connection with the grassroots.
Interestingly, also present at the event was Gloria Orwoba, a former nominated senator who was recently expelled from the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party.
Her presence at an event dominated by opposition leaders sparked further curiosity and speculation about shifting political loyalties.
Wamuchomba’s public endorsement of Matiang’i raised eyebrows for a number of reasons. First, Matiang’i is part of a growing opposition alliance that includes big political names such as Gachagua, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, and Martha Karua of the People’s Liberation Party (PLP).
Each of these leaders is believed to be eyeing the presidency in the 2027 general election.
Although Gachagua has repeatedly said that their opposition coalition is united and will not break apart despite having several presidential hopefuls, the team has yet to reveal who they will ultimately back to challenge President William Ruto in 2027.
Given Wamuchomba’s history of fiercely defending Gachagua and her visible loyalty to him, many had assumed that she would support his presidential bid.
Her recent comments now appear to clarify her current political direction and raise new questions about possible divisions within the opposition alliance.
While Wamuchomba was endorsing Matiang’i in Kiambu, Gachagua spent his Sunday in Laikipia West, Laikipia County. He attended a church service and met with residents in Muhotetu.
During his visit, he continued his usual sharp criticism of the government, particularly in light of the nationwide protests that erupted in June 2025.
Wamuchomba’s latest remarks signal a shift that could reshape the political landscape, especially as the race to 2027 gains momentum. Her unexpected support for Matiang’i might influence other leaders and raise tensions within the still-forming opposition coalition.
