Tension has gripped Limuru after the family of Peter Kawanjiru, a close ally of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, claimed that their relative was abducted by plainclothes officers believed to be from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Monday night.
According to the family, a group of unknown men who identified themselves as DCI officers raided their home at around 8:30pm.
The men, dressed in civilian clothes, allegedly forced their way into the house by breaking doors and scattering household items, saying they were there to arrest Kawanjiru, the youth leader of the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP).
Eyewitnesses and family members described a terrifying scene, saying over ten vehicles suddenly arrived and parked near their home. Not long after, the area experienced a sudden power outage, followed by loud noises, heavy banging on doors, gunshots, and general chaos.
“They said they were from the DCI offices on Kiambu Road and were looking for Kawanjiru. We refused to open the door because they didn’t identify themselves properly. Then they began hitting the metal door violently with rods,” a relative said.
The family further claimed that no arrest warrant was shown, and no reason was given for the dramatic operation. “I asked them whether he had committed any crime—if he had killed someone or stolen something—but they just said they were doing what they had been sent to do,” the family member added.
Peter Kawanjiru is known for his outspoken stance against the Kenya Kwanza administration. He has been actively pushing anti-government slogans like “Wan tam” and rallying young people to demand better governance.
In an interview with NTV, the family said the situation became more dangerous when the alleged officers began firing live bullets into the air, prompting terrified residents and onlookers to run for cover.
The confrontation reportedly lasted more than four hours, with the officers eventually leaving with Kawanjiru. Since that night, he has not been seen or heard from.
The family says they have searched for him across various police stations in Kiambu and Nairobi but have received no confirmation of his arrest or location. They now fear for his safety and are demanding answers from authorities.
This incident has sparked outrage and renewed concern among Kenyans, especially over the rising number of cases where individuals are allegedly abducted without due process. Human rights groups and citizens alike are calling for transparency and accountability.
Kawanjiru’s disappearance is not an isolated case. Just a few weeks ago, Juja MP George Koimburi, another ally of Gachagua, was reportedly abducted under similar circumstances.
Although DCI officers later dismissed his abduction as staged, Koimburi denied the claim, insisting he had been taken by force while leaving a church service at the Full Gospel Churches of Kenya. He later spent several weeks in Karen Hospital recovering from the ordeal.
In a related development, Wanjiku Thiga, the National Youth Leader and a National Executive Council (NEC) member of the DCP party, has also reported that she was abducted.
Thiga, who has been vocal in demanding Kawanjiru’s release, posted on her X (formerly Twitter) account that she had allegedly been taken at Kamakis, further fueling speculation of a pattern targeting Gachagua’s allies.
These incidents have deepened concerns among political observers and the public, who worry about the increasing cases of politically motivated disappearances and intimidation in Kenya.
Many are now urging the government and investigative bodies to act swiftly to investigate these claims and ensure that the rule of law is upheld.
