Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has called out the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss, Amin Mohammed, urging him to take action and demand a formal statement from Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah regarding serious murder allegations made during recent protests.
While speaking at a burial ceremony held on Tuesday, July 1, in Nyandarua County, Gachagua questioned why Ichung’wah, who also serves as the National Assembly Majority Leader, had not yet given an official statement to the police.
He criticized the lawmaker for making emotional claims in Parliament that his parents were targeted for assassination, instead of reporting the matter through the proper legal channels.
“I’ve heard the DCI speaking. The Kikuyu MP went to Parliament and claimed that he knows those who wanted to take the lives of his parents.
But has he reported it to the police?” Gachagua asked. “If someone is planning to kill your parents, how do you just speak about it in Parliament as if it’s nothing, instead of rushing to the police station to file a report?” he added.
Gachagua went further to challenge the DCI to also obtain a formal statement from Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen over comments he made about those who organized and participated in the June 25 protests.
He criticized Murkomen for what he described as reckless remarks that seemed to criminalize the entire Kikuyu community. According to Gachagua, Murkomen falsely accused residents of Murang’a, Kirinyaga, and Nyeri counties of being behind the destruction and chaos witnessed in Nairobi during the protests.
“Murkomen said those who looted and burnt property in Nairobi came from Murang’a, Kirinyaga, and Nyeri. Do the people from Mt Kenya have any special mark on their foreheads to identify them?” Gachagua questioned.
He accused the DCI of turning a blind eye to these serious accusations, asking why neither Ichung’wah nor Murkomen had been summoned to explain how they got their information. “Why has the DCI not taken a statement from Murkomen to explain how he knows the people behind the protests are from the Mt Kenya region?” he pressed further.
During the same church gathering, Gachagua also took the opportunity to criticize President William Ruto. He accused the Head of State of deliberately isolating him from the Mt Kenya political base, in a similar manner to how former President Uhuru Kenyatta was allegedly sidelined.
Gachagua further accused Ruto and his close allies of using government machinery and violence to intimidate and suppress opposition voices.
He urged the government to focus on investigating the real causes behind the protests instead of launching attacks on the opposition for political gain.
He also addressed the ongoing power struggle between himself and President Ruto for dominance in the Mt Kenya region.
Gachagua insisted that Ruto had already lost favor with the region’s voters and warned that no amount of intimidation or political games could reverse that.
“You think you can threaten me? You tried to impeach me and hoped I would lose support in Mt Kenya. Now let me ask you — can you even dare come here and ask for votes? You believed the lies told by Kimani Ichung’wah, and now look, you’re vulnerable,” Gachagua said defiantly.
In his remarks, Gachagua painted a picture of a government losing touch with the people and trying to divert attention from serious matters through political blame games.
He insisted that accountability must be applied equally, whether one is in government or opposition.
