Athletics Kenya Reschedules Trials for 2025 World Athletics Championships
Athletics Kenya has officially announced a change in the dates and venue for the national trials ahead of the 2025 World Athletics Championships.
In a statement released on Friday, July 4, the athletics governing body explained that the decision to reschedule was caused by the unavailability of the stadium on the earlier planned dates of August 1 and August 2, 2025.
“This adjustment has been necessitated by the unavailability of the stadium on the initially scheduled dates of 1st–2nd August,” the statement read.
Athletics Kenya urged all athletes, coaches, and stakeholders to take note of the new changes and adjust their training schedules and preparations to align with the new plan. The revised date for the trials is now set for Tuesday, July 22, 2025, and will be held at the Ulinzi Sports Complex in Nairobi.
“Athletics Kenya wishes to inform all athletes and stakeholders within the athletics community that the trials for the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo will now take place on July 22, 2025, at the Ulinzi Sports Complex in Nairobi,” the organization said.
The body also gave important updates regarding other logistical matters, including the collection of race bibs. According to the announcement, athletes will be required to collect their bibs on Monday, July 21, 2025, a day before the trials. The bibs will be available at the same venue—Ulinzi Sports Complex—from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.
Athletics Kenya emphasized that the trials will only be open to invited athletes, and that the invitation criteria will be made public soon. This means only athletes who meet specific selection standards will be allowed to participate in the event.
“Participation at the trials will be strictly by invitation only. Further details—including the list of invited athletes, how the invitations will be issued, and the full selection criteria for the Kenyan team heading to Tokyo—will be shared in due course,” read the full statement.
These trials are part of Kenya’s strategic preparations for the 2025 World Athletics Championships, which are scheduled to take place in Tokyo, Japan, from September 13 to September 21, 2025.
The global event will be hosted at Tokyo’s newly rebuilt Japan National Stadium, a world-class facility capable of hosting over 68,000 spectators. Over 2,000 athletes from more than 200 countries are expected to compete in a wide variety of 49 track and field events during the championships.
Organizers expect the tournament to attract massive attendance and deliver high-level competition, with athletes from around the globe vying for world titles.
Kenya is known for its dominance in middle- and long-distance races, and the national trials are a critical step in selecting a strong team to represent the country on the international stage.
Athletics Kenya concluded its statement by encouraging all involved to remain alert for further announcements regarding the invitation and selection processes.
