Kenyan Woman Tragically Dies While Working in the UK
Authorities in the United Kingdom have launched investigations into the heartbreaking death of Irene Wanjiru, a 48-year-old Kenyan woman who died while on duty as a caregiver.
Wanjiru was discovered dead inside a patient’s house in Birmingham on June 23, just a few days after she had joyfully reunited with her children in the UK.
The single mother of four, originally from Mataara village in Gatundu North, Kiambu County, had spent most of her life working tirelessly to give her children a brighter future.
Her journey of hope took her to the UK in 2023, where she managed to secure a job as a caregiver—a role she embraced with passion and dedication.
After arriving in the UK, Wanjiru’s dreams slowly started to take shape. Her eldest son was the first to join her, and after months of waiting and effort, her other children, including her twins, were finally able to travel and be with her.
The family was beginning to settle down and build the life they had all longed for. However, tragedy struck just when things were starting to fall into place.
On the night of June 22, Wanjiru reported for a night shift in Winson Green, Birmingham, where she was assigned to care for a male patient struggling with mental health conditions.
Sadly, this would be her final shift. Unaware of the looming danger, she left her children behind with plans to spend more time with them after the shift.
According to reports from the UK police, the patient she was caring for suddenly turned violent and assaulted her using a blunt object. Wanjiru was working alone at the time and did not get a chance to raise an alarm or call for help.
When she failed to perform her regular check-ins, something she was always consistent with, concern began to grow among her colleagues and supervisors.
This prompted an urgent search for her whereabouts. Investigators tracked her last known location to the house where she had been working.
At around 1 a.m. on June 23, police officers forced their way into the residence. Inside, they found Wanjiru’s body—she had succumbed to her injuries.
A man in his 30s was arrested at the scene in connection with her death. A post-mortem examination later confirmed that Wanjiru had died from serious head injuries caused by blunt force trauma.
The UK police have confirmed that investigations into her death are ongoing as they work to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
News of her passing has caused widespread grief, especially among Kenyans living in the UK, many of whom are employed in the caregiving industry.
The incident has sparked concerns over the safety of caregivers, especially those who often work alone in high-risk environments.
Her grieving family is still trying to come to terms with the loss. Her brother, Gilbert Mbugua, expressed deep sorrow as he remembered how happy Wanjiru was after finally bringing her twins to the UK.
“She was so excited. She had just reunited with her twins and was looking forward to starting a new chapter with them. Then this happened… it’s devastating,” Mbugua said in pain.
Wanjiru’s death has left a deep scar not only on her family but also in the hearts of many who knew her or shared a similar journey. For now, her loved ones are calling for justice and support as they try to process the sudden and painful loss.
