Nairobi Leaders Appeal for Peace Ahead of Saba Saba Protests
Leaders from Nairobi, led by Women Representative Esther Passaris, have made a strong call for peace as the country approaches the Saba Saba Day protests. They have also revealed a worrying plan to attack the homes of several political leaders during the demonstrations.
Passaris shared that she has received troubling information suggesting that some Kenyans living abroad are raising funds with the intention of supporting violent acts during the protests.
At a joint press briefing on Sunday, Passaris, who has faced criticism from some Kenyans online in recent days, explained that there appears to be a deliberate and well-organized plan to send money into Kenya to fuel unrest amid the ongoing protests.
These protests began after the tragic death of Albert Ojwang, a blogger and teacher, who died while in police custody last month. Passaris recounted a specific message she received from a number in Germany, which said, “We are fundraising, raising money, and we plan to fund attacks on politicians’ homes.”
She added, “I also have a friend in the UK who was invited to a gathering where the main purpose was to raise funds to send back to Kenya.” This, she claimed, shows a clear attempt by some groups to financially support violence during the protests.
Passaris further cited intelligence from various countries including Israel, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Dubai, the United States, Canada, Germany, and the UK. She urged young people to be cautious and not let politicians exploit them or hijack the protests scheduled for Monday.
The leaders expressed concern that what should have been peaceful demonstrations to express public concerns has instead turned violent. Shops have been looted, businesses damaged, lives lost, and harmful tribalism rhetoric has started to spread through communities.
In a joint statement, Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris, Nominated Senators Tabitha Mutinda and Karen Nyamu, Makadara MP George Aladwa, and Lang’ata MP Phelix Odiwuor (known as Jalang’o) urged fellow politicians to put national unity above their personal political ambitions.
They said, “At this crucial time, we cannot just stand by and watch our country fall into chaos and division.”
The leaders warned that the protests have been taken over by opportunistic politicians and criminal groups who have turned peaceful demonstrations into violent clashes.
“To our fellow leaders, the message is very clear: If your politics relies on dividing Kenyans, then you have already failed. If your plan is to spread tribal hatred, you do not deserve to be in leadership,” they added firmly.
This strong appeal highlights the urgent need for calm and responsible leadership during a time when the nation faces significant challenges. The call is for peace, unity, and the protection of all citizens as Kenya prepares for the Saba Saba Day protests.
