Tension gripped Archers Post in Isiolo County on Saturday, July 5, after angry residents stormed the local police station, demanding action against a police officer involved in a fatal road accident.
According to a statement released by the Counter Terrorism Police Unit (CTPU), an officer from the Administration Police’s Border Patrol Unit was behind the wheel of a Toyota Land Cruiser when he accidentally hit a woman in the busy Archers Post town centre.
The incident sparked outrage among locals who were demanding justice for the victim.
“The police at Archers Post Station detained a government vehicle belonging to the Border Patrol Unit, which was involved in an accident at the town centre,” read part of the statement. “The Land Cruiser, driven by an AP officer, struck a lady in the crowded centre. The driver is now in custody.”
Initial reports that circulated on Saturday indicated that a woman had been knocked down and killed by a speeding vehicle suspected to belong to the National Intelligence Service (NIS).
However, police have since clarified that the vehicle was registered under the Administration Police Service.
Once the officer surrendered at the station, angry residents, fueled by grief and frustration, forcefully entered the premises in protest.
The situation grew tense, and there were unconfirmed reports of gunfire being heard in the area as police tried to restore order.
The woman’s body was transported to Isiolo Mortuary, and the incident has left the community devastated. Residents are now calling for a transparent investigation and for those responsible to be held accountable.
This unfortunate incident comes shortly after another tragic road accident involving police officers. On the evening of June 22, four police officers lost their lives along the Garissa Highway when their vehicle lost control and rolled several times.
According to eyewitnesses, the police vehicle was reportedly moving at high speed before the driver lost control, causing the deadly crash. There were six officers on board at the time.
Four of them died instantly at the scene, while the remaining two suffered severe injuries. They were rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency medical care.
The two accidents, occurring within weeks of each other, have sparked concerns over the safety practices of police drivers and the need for more accountability within the security forces.
As investigations continue, the public is urging law enforcement agencies to ensure justice is served and such incidents are prevented in the future.
