National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah has made serious accusations against former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, claiming he was behind the violence witnessed during the recent protests.
Ichung’wah alleged that Gachagua even tried to have his home, as well as that of his elderly parents in Kikuyu, set on fire.
In a detailed statement released on Wednesday, July 9, Ichung’wah said he had avoided responding to Gachagua’s earlier claims for some time, but the worsening situation has forced him to speak out. According to Ichung’wah, the level of violence during the protests could no longer be ignored.
He strongly rejected Gachagua’s claims that the government was staging attacks on public property to blame opposition leaders, calling such statements “pure madness.” Ichung’wah instead accused Gachagua of being the mastermind behind the unrest, allegedly to shield his close allies who were caught engaging in criminal acts.
“Were it not for my vigilant neighbours and committed police officers, my house and my parents’ home would have been burned down,” Ichung’wah stated. He emphasized that the attacks appeared to be organized and deliberate, not just random acts of violence.
These accusations came shortly after a press briefing by Gachagua, in which the former deputy president claimed that incidents like the burning of a police station and the Kikuyu Law Courts were staged to criminalize his political allies.
Two of Gachagua’s close associates, including Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji, were arrested in connection to the arson attacks on the Kikuyu court premises.
In response, Gachagua accused Ichung’wah of orchestrating the violence himself to gain sympathy and boost his political image. However, Ichung’wah dismissed these claims and said Gachagua is entirely responsible for his own political decline.
“His political fall was not caused by anyone else. He is the architect of his own downfall through his politics of lies, threats, and organized chaos,” Ichung’wah asserted.
He further accused Gachagua of defending individuals arrested for inciting violence and theft, including Mukunji. Ichung’wah claimed Mukunji was seen rallying youth to loot Spur Mall on Thika Road.
The majority leader insisted that Gachagua is trying to push the country into a state of disorder for personal gain. He expressed concern that the recent violence was not just political but a calculated attempt to destabilize the country.
Ichung’wah’s remarks align with President William Ruto’s recent statements, in which the president condemned the rising violence. Ruto warned that the government would not sit back and watch the nation descend into chaos and promised firm action to restore order and peace.
Ichung’wah’s latest accusations add to the ongoing tensions within Kenya’s political scene, especially as leaders continue trading blame over the recent wave of protests and destruction.
