The story of former Ruaraka Police Station Officer Commanding Station (OCS) Nahashon Mutua, who is now serving a life sentence at Kamiti Maximum Security Prison, stands out as one of the most tragic and revealing cases of police brutality in Kenya.
In 2013, a man named Martin Koome was arrested following a domestic disagreement and taken to Ruaraka Police Station.
Instead of being treated fairly and protected under the law, Koome was subjected to horrifying torture while in police custody. Reports later revealed that Mutua was directly responsible for this brutal treatment.
Koome was beaten severely using a metal pipe and was also reportedly forced into a drum of water, acts that left him with critical injuries. He was eventually rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital, but sadly, he did not survive.
Shockingly, in the early stages of the investigation, police accused another detainee, Kevin Odhiambo, of causing Koome’s death. This false accusation nearly led to an innocent man being wrongfully punished.
However, the truth began to surface thanks to thorough investigations carried out by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA). Their findings revealed that the real culprit behind the deadly assault was not Odhiambo, but OCS Nahashon Mutua himself.
Mutua had tried to hide his actions by fabricating a story that Koome was killed in a fight among inmates. But medical evidence and several witness testimonies told a different story—one of violent abuse at the hands of a police officer entrusted with the protection of citizens.
The court proceedings highlighted serious issues of police violence and impunity within the Kenyan police force.
Despite Mutua’s attempts to cover up the crime, interfere with investigations, and intimidate those who dared to speak the truth, the evidence against him was overwhelming. Eventually, the court found him guilty of murder and sentenced him to life imprisonment.
Mutua’s case became a landmark moment in Kenya’s ongoing efforts to hold police officers accountable for abuses of power. It showed that, despite the challenges, justice could be served—even when the accused is a high-ranking officer in the police service.
This conviction was seen as a strong message from the judiciary and IPOA that no one is above the law, and that the days of unchecked police brutality must come to an end.
It also highlighted the critical role played by oversight bodies like IPOA in promoting justice and defending the rights of ordinary citizens.
Mutua’s life sentence is more than just a punishment for one man’s crime; it represents a step forward in Kenya’s broader struggle to reform its security sector and bring an end to a culture of impunity that has long overshadowed the country’s law enforcement agencies.
