The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a weather advisory indicating that various regions in the country will experience rainfall and cold conditions over the next five days—from Friday, July 11, to Tuesday, July 16.
According to the forecast released on Friday, rainfall is expected across a wide area, particularly in the Highlands both East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley itself, and parts of north-western Kenya.
In the eastern highland counties, including Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi, residents should expect light showers during this period. These areas will also experience cool and cloudy conditions, especially in the early mornings and evenings.
A similar weather pattern is projected along the coastal strip, affecting Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale, and the coastal areas of Tana River County. These counties are likely to receive light rains mostly in the morning and at night.
However, the Met Department has warned of heavier rainfall expected in several counties within Western Kenya and parts of the Central Rift Valley. These include Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, and Uasin Gishu.
Also set to receive heavy showers are Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot. The heavy rain in these areas may come with thunderstorms, particularly in the afternoons.
Meanwhile, counties such as Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta will largely remain cloudy throughout the five-day period, with minimal chances of rainfall. These regions may experience cool days and chilly nights.
The weather agency also highlighted that temperatures in certain parts of the country, especially around the Central Kenya region, the Rift Valley, and areas surrounding Lake Victoria, are expected to drop significantly. In some places, the lowest temperatures could reach around 11°C, especially in the early morning hours.
“Cold and cloudy conditions are likely to persist in parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, South-eastern Lowlands, and sections of the Rift Valley,” the Kenya Met Department noted.
The full list of counties likely to experience cold and wet weather includes Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, Nairobi, Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot.
The department advised residents in these areas to dress warmly, take caution during travel, and be prepared for possible disruptions due to wet and cold weather. Updates will continue to be provided through official Kenya Met platforms as the weather situation evolves.
