A tragic road accident involving multiple vehicles has claimed several lives in Kijauri Town, located in Borabu Constituency, Nyamira County. The fatal crash occurred on the afternoon of Friday, July 11, leaving at least five people confirmed dead, with several others feared injured.
Although the precise cause of the accident is still under investigation, early reports suggest that a lorry, reportedly carrying an overloaded timber load, lost control while descending a steep stretch of road. The lorry veered off its lane and crashed into a matatu (public minibus) and a private vehicle, resulting in a devastating pile-up.
Local police have yet to release an official statement on the exact number of fatalities and injuries. However, disturbing images from the accident scene show the lorry and private car badly crushed, with the matatu also showing heavy damage. The wreckage clearly illustrates the force of the impact, as the collision left the vehicles severely mangled.
Emergency rescue teams responded quickly, with paramedics and law enforcement arriving to help victims and begin a probe into the circumstances that led to the crash. Witness accounts and surveillance from nearby buildings are expected to form part of the ongoing investigation.
Additional photos from the scene indicate that the accident happened near a local shopping centre. Some of the damaged shops and buildings in the area suggest that part of the lorry’s cargo container was thrown against nearby structures.
Authorities believe that some of the victims may have been pedestrians or shop workers caught up in the crash, although this has yet to be officially verified.
The Kisii-Sotik highway, where the accident occurred, is notoriously known as an accident-prone zone or “black spot.” Over the years, it has been the site of multiple fatal crashes, raising concerns about road safety along the busy route.
In a past incident on Monday evening, April 7, a deadly crash involving a trailer and a Subaru at Bobaracho along the same highway left two people dead and three seriously injured.
According to Kisii County Police Commander Ronald Kirui, the accident happened when the driver of the Subaru lost control and swerved into the path of an oncoming trailer heading from Kisii to Keroka, causing a violent head-on collision.
That tragic crash came just two days after another major accident on Saturday, April 5, in which at least 13 people lost their lives, and 11 others were left with serious injuries. That earlier incident involved three vehicles and further highlighted the dangers associated with the Kisii-Sotik road.
As investigations into the most recent Kijauri crash continue, local leaders and residents are once again calling for urgent government intervention to enhance safety measures on the deadly stretch of road. Calls for better signage, stricter enforcement of traffic rules, and redesigning dangerous road sections have grown louder in the wake of yet another devastating tragedy.
