The national government is preparing to deploy Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officers to Kakamega County this week to supervise the construction of a new hospital.
In a statement released on Sunday, July 13, KDF confirmed that officers will begin operations next week to oversee the six-month construction of the Kakamega Level 6 Hospital. The facility is expected to be completed within that timeframe.
Level 6 hospitals represent the highest tier in Kenya’s public healthcare system. They are managed by the national government and are designed to offer advanced medical services, including specialized and referral care. Once finished, the Kakamega hospital will join the ranks of a few top-tier health facilities available in the country.
Currently, Kenya has only eight Level 6 hospitals. These include Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral & Research Hospital (KUTRRH), Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) in Kisumu, and Mathari National Teaching & Referral Hospital.
Other facilities in this category are the National Spinal Injury Referral Hospital, Nakuru Level 6 Hospital, and Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital.
In addition to the Kakamega project, KDF officers are also involved in supervising several other major infrastructure projects across the country. In Nandi County, they are overseeing the construction of the 10,000-seater Kipchoge Sports Stadium located at the Kapsabet Show Ground.
In Uasin Gishu County, they are managing the development of the 15,000-seater Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret. These two major sports facilities are being prepared as part of Kenya’s readiness to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) alongside Uganda and Tanzania.
KDF noted in their statement that Defence Principal Secretary Patrick Mariru recently carried out a full-day inspection of the ongoing infrastructure projects in Kakamega, Nandi, and Uasin Gishu Counties.
“The projects are being carried out under the supervision of the Ministry of Defence (MoD) through the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), following a directive by President William Ruto to speed up the implementation of national flagship projects,” KDF said.
According to PS Mariru, these development initiatives are part of the government’s broader strategy to enhance service delivery and improve key sectors such as healthcare, sports, and infrastructure in the region. He noted that the projects are vital to unlocking the region’s economic and social potential.
This development comes just a month after the Ministry of Defence also announced that KDF personnel will be deployed to Siaya County. Their role there will be to oversee the construction of the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium and to support the upgrading of Siaya Level 5 Hospital.
Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya emphasized that these new projects in Siaya are crucial for improving the region’s economy and infrastructure. She added that the Ministry is working closely with local authorities to ensure the projects have a long-lasting impact.
“We explored areas of collaboration between the Ministry of Defence and the Siaya County Government, especially in infrastructure development and maritime security, during a meeting with Governor James Orengo at the Defence Headquarters,” CS Tuya said in a statement issued on Wednesday, June 11.
Overall, the deployment of KDF to lead such critical national projects underlines the government’s commitment to fast-track the delivery of essential infrastructure and services in key counties across the country.
