Uhuru Kenyatta Honoured with Prestigious Global Award by WHO
Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has received a major international award from the World Health Organisation (WHO) in recognition of his key role in supporting the WHO Pandemic Agreement.
The WHO Pandemic Agreement is a landmark initiative that brings together member countries of the World Health Organisation in a shared commitment to improve global efforts in preventing, preparing for, and responding to pandemics.
Uhuru Kenyatta was especially praised for his leadership and dedication throughout the negotiation process that led to the adoption of the agreement. His contribution was acknowledged during the 78th World Health Assembly, held in May 2025.
The former Kenyan President was officially presented with the award on July 10, 2025, during a special event hosted at the WHO Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. The ceremony brought together several high-ranking dignitaries and global leaders.
The certificate of recognition was personally signed by WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
The certificate read:
“His Excellency Uhuru Kenyatta, former President of Kenya. In recognition of your key role in championing and advocating for the WHO Pandemic Agreement that was adopted by the Seventy-eighth World Health Assembly on May 20, 2025.”
Uhuru Kenyatta was among a group of world leaders who received the same honour. In total, leaders from 25 countries were recognised for their significant contributions.
Among the countries represented were Albania, Costa Rica, Croatia, Fiji, France, Germany, Greece, Indonesia, Italy, Kenya, Korea, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Romania, Rwanda, Senegal, Serbia, South Africa, Spain, Thailand, Trinidad and Tobago, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom.
Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, in his remarks, described the adoption of the Pandemic Agreement as a major turning point in the global health landscape. He emphasized that the achievement would not have been possible without strong and consistent support from top political leaders like Uhuru Kenyatta.
“The adoption by the World Health Assembly of the Pandemic Agreement was a historic moment in global health,” said Dr. Ghebreyesus. “But we would not have reached that moment without sustained political advocacy from the highest levels.”
He also highlighted that the agreement marks a new chapter in global health governance, where countries commit to building a stronger and fairer international health system based on cooperation, equity, and mutual accountability.
This latest award adds to the growing list of international recognitions received by the former President. In 2023, Uhuru was honoured for his role in helping bring peace to Northern Ethiopia, where he played a central role in supporting a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
In 2022, he was also acknowledged for his critical efforts in promoting peace, stability, and security across the Great Lakes region, especially in Burundi.
Uhuru Kenyatta’s latest recognition by WHO cements his legacy not only as a national leader but also as a respected figure on the international stage who continues to champion peace, unity, and global cooperation in key areas such as health and conflict resolution.
