Several KDF Soldiers Killed and Injured in IED Attack During Routine Patrol
Three Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldiers have sadly lost their lives, and several others were injured after their military vehicle ran over an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) on Tuesday afternoon.
Security and operational sources confirmed that the soldiers were on a regular patrol along the Sakuri–Kiunga Main Supply Route (MSR) when the explosion happened. The area, located near Kenya’s border with Somalia, is known for sporadic attacks by suspected Al-Shabaab militants.
In an official statement, the KDF Strategic Communications team said that seven other officers suffered injuries during the incident.
The injured personnel were immediately given emergency medical attention and later airlifted to a hospital in Kiunga for specialised care. KDF reported that the wounded soldiers are responding positively to treatment and continue to be closely monitored by military medical teams.
“Earlier today, our KDF troops were conducting a patrol along the Sankuri–Kiunga MSR when their vehicle encountered an IED. Following the explosion, our security teams launched a coordinated response operation, including a hot pursuit mission to track down the attackers,” the KDF statement read.
They further stated that all access routes in and out of the area have been put under close surveillance to prevent the militants from escaping or regrouping.
“Unfortunately, three of our brave soldiers succumbed to injuries sustained in the blast. These gallant officers gave their lives in the line of duty, serving and protecting the people of Kenya. The entire KDF family expresses heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of the fallen heroes,” the statement added.
KDF assured the public that efforts to enhance security will be intensified, especially in areas surrounding Boni Forest, which remains a high-risk zone due to its proximity to the Somali border. The region has often been used by militants as a hideout and launch point for cross-border attacks.
In the same statement, KDF praised the courage and commitment shown by the affected troops and acknowledged the quick response by other units and multi-agency teams deployed in the area. These joint operations are part of Operation Amani Boni, a long-term initiative aimed at flushing out extremist elements and restoring peace in the region.
“KDF and our multi-agency partners remain firm and determined in our mission. Our resolve to protect our country and its citizens remains unshaken. We honour the sacrifice of our soldiers and continue to stand in solidarity with their families during this painful time,” the KDF concluded.
As the operation to pursue the perpetrators continues, the military has stepped up its security presence and manning of key routes to prevent further attacks and ensure the safety of both troops and civilians in the affected region.
