Maraga Reveals His Plan to Fund 2027 Presidential Campaign

Former Chief Justice David Maraga has opened up about how he plans to finance his presidential campaign for the 2027 General Elections.

In an interview aired on Citizen TV, Maraga stated that his campaign will mostly depend on the goodwill and financial support of ordinary Kenyans.

While the full budget for the campaign is still being worked on, Maraga said that his team is currently calculating the required figures.

However, he made it clear that their strategy is to invite Kenyans to fund the campaign themselves. According to him, this will make it a government truly built by and for the people.

“We’re still putting together the finer details because a presidential campaign needs a significant amount of money,” he said. “But I strongly believe that Kenyans will come through and support this cause.

This will be a people-powered campaign. Once we receive support and are elected, no one will manipulate us, because we’ll be fully accountable to Wanjiku (the ordinary citizen),” he added.

Although Maraga plans to contribute to the campaign personally, he mentioned that he will only invest a modest amount, estimated between Ksh1 million and Ksh2 million. He emphasized that ordinary Kenyans will not be expected to dig deep into their pockets, especially during such tough economic times.

Maraga revealed that many Kenyans have already shown willingness to contribute to the campaign. According to him, supporters across different parts of the country have been reaching out, asking when the campaign will unveil its official Paybill number so they can begin donating.

“The people we are engaging with—both in person and online—keep asking us when we’re going to launch the Paybill number,” he shared. “We’re not asking anyone to give a lot of money.

Even Ksh10 or Ksh20 will go a long way. We know Kenyans are suffering economically, and that’s why we will make the contribution process open and flexible.”

Maraga went on to say that based on the early responses from supporters, he believes they might even raise more money than they need.

He promised that any extra funds collected from the public would not go to waste, but instead be directed toward a meaningful public initiative.

He is one of several individuals who have declared their interest in challenging President William Ruto in the 2027 presidential race.

During the same interview, Maraga took a strong stand against Parliament, accusing it of failing in its duty by not impeaching President Ruto despite what he described as serious violations of the Constitution.

He criticized Members of Parliament for not holding the President accountable, saying they had the legal power to act but have instead remained silent.

“Parliament has the authority to impeach the President, and yet nothing has been done,” Maraga remarked. “He has breached several constitutional provisions. If Parliament was truly carrying out its responsibility, Ruto would no longer be in office.”

Maraga’s bold statements and grassroots funding strategy are likely to spark national conversations as Kenya approaches the 2027 General Elections.

His approach presents a direct challenge to the traditional way of running expensive campaigns funded by wealthy backers, positioning his candidacy as one rooted in public trust and transparency.
