Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officers are set to be deployed to Nakuru County to help complete a number of government infrastructure projects that have stalled for years. This was confirmed by the Ministry of Defence in a statement released on Wednesday, July 16.
According to the ministry, KDF will take charge of completing the Afraha Stadium and the Olenguruone Stadium, as well as finalizing the construction of the Trauma Centre at Nakuru Teaching and Referral Hospital. The work will be carried out in partnership with the Nakuru County government.
The decision was made following a high-level meeting on Tuesday, July 15, between Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya and Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika, along with other senior county officials.
However, the Ministry of Defence has not yet revealed the specific date when the KDF personnel will be deployed to begin the work.
“The Cabinet Secretary and the Governor met to discuss priority infrastructure projects which will be undertaken by the Ministry of Defence through the Kenya Defence Forces,” read part of the statement by KDF.
“The Government is focusing on completing the Afraha Stadium, building the Olenguruone Stadium, and finalising the Trauma Centre at the Nakuru Teaching and Referral Hospital — a project that has remained incomplete since 2012,” the statement added.
Governor Susan Kihika welcomed the collaboration, saying that these projects are crucial for improving the county’s infrastructure and will significantly enhance public service delivery.
She emphasized that the completion of these long-delayed facilities would benefit residents across Nakuru County and help unlock the county’s full development potential.
This move comes just two days after the Ministry of Defence also announced that more KDF personnel would be sent to other counties, including Kakamega, Nandi, and Uasin Gishu, to supervise major development projects in those regions.
Defence Principal Secretary Patrick Mariru stated that the deployment of KDF to handle these infrastructure projects is in line with a directive issued by President William Ruto. The goal is to fast-track the development of key public facilities that are vital for improving service delivery and economic growth across different counties.
In Kakamega County, KDF officers are expected to begin work this week on the construction of the Kakamega Level 6 Hospital. The hospital is scheduled to be completed within six months and will provide advanced, tertiary-level medical services to residents of the region.
Meanwhile, in Nandi County, KDF will oversee the construction of a 10,000-seater Kipchoge Sports Stadium, which will be located at the Kapsabet Show Ground. The facility is expected to boost sports development and provide a modern venue for athletics and other sporting events.
In Uasin Gishu County, KDF will be responsible for supervising the development of the 15,000-seater Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret.
This stadium is being constructed in preparation for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which Kenya is jointly hosting. The stadium is expected to meet international standards and serve as a major venue for continental football events.
“The Defence Principal Secretary, Patrick Mariru, recently conducted a full-day tour to inspect critical government infrastructure projects in Kakamega, Nandi, and Uasin Gishu counties,” KDF said in their statement.
Overall, the involvement of KDF in these development projects highlights the government’s commitment to accelerating the completion of stalled infrastructure and ensuring that essential services reach citizens in various parts of the country.
