Marc Dillard, the outgoing United States Ambassador to Kenya, has delivered an emotional farewell message to the people of Kenya as he officially wraps up his diplomatic mission in the country after several months of service.
Speaking on Friday morning, Ambassador Dillard expressed his heartfelt gratitude and admiration for the Kenyan people, describing Kenya as a land rich in culture, history, and untapped potential.
In a short video clip shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Dillard reflected on his time in Kenya, saying he had built meaningful relationships across all areas of society—from government officials to civil society groups and private sector leaders.
He shared that his experience in Kenya went far beyond his expected diplomatic responsibilities. He spoke warmly about the unity, energy, and resilience he witnessed during his stay, noting that these qualities are what truly define the Kenyan spirit.
“When I first arrived in Kenya, I knew I was stepping into a nation with a powerful heritage and endless opportunities,” he said. “But what I didn’t expect was how quickly this country would begin to feel like home.”
He added, “Whether it was through efforts in improving security, advancing health care, or promoting economic growth, I saw the strength and determination of Kenyans in every corner of society.
I have been constantly reminded that the values we share as Americans and Kenyans—such as community, hard work, and hope—are what bring us closer.”
Ambassador Dillard also took a moment to reflect on the friendships he had made throughout his posting, calling his time in Kenya a personal journey filled with connection, learning, and mutual respect.
“Serving here has been more than just a diplomatic assignment. To every Kenyan friend I’ve had the pleasure of meeting, and to everyone I’ve interacted with—thank you from the bottom of my heart,” he said.
Marc Dillard was selected by former U.S. President Joe Biden in December last year to serve as a temporary U.S. ambassador to Kenya. His appointment came shortly after Ambassador Meg Whitman officially stepped down from her position.
Whitman, who had served as U.S. Ambassador to Kenya for two years, had personally announced Dillard’s appointment, referring to him as a trusted and experienced diplomat who would take over in an interim capacity until the incoming U.S. administration, under President Donald Trump, selected a permanent replacement.
“It has been an honour to serve as the U.S. Ambassador to Kenya for the past two years,” Whitman had stated. “As I depart, please join me in welcoming Marc Dillard, who will lead the embassy as Chargé d’Affaires.”
Whitman officially resigned on November 13, 2024, and in her parting words, she described her service in Kenya as both an honour and a privilege—echoing the same sentiment now shared by Dillard as he says his final goodbyes to the country.
