At least 11 pupils from Hills Valley Academy in Ngong, Kajiado County were left nursing injuries after their school bus was involved in a road accident on Friday evening, July 18.
According to reports, the crash occurred around 4:30 pm along Baboon Crescent Road as the school bus was ferrying children home after a regular school day. Eyewitnesses say the bus suddenly lost control for reasons that remain unclear and overturned along the rough, murram road.
Quick-thinking residents, who were nearby at the time of the incident, rushed to the scene and worked together to rescue the trapped pupils from the wreckage. The injured learners were immediately taken to Kenswed Hospital for emergency treatment.
Images and video clips shared widely on social media showed the overturned yellow school bus lying on its side with shattered windows and broken mirrors, painting a picture of just how serious the accident was. Several onlookers could be seen crowding around the bus, helping where they could.
Although the actual number of pupils on board hasn’t been officially confirmed, authorities have thankfully reported that there were no fatalities during the incident.
Residents blamed the poor condition of the road for the crash, pointing out that this was not the first accident to happen in the area. Many expressed frustration that despite repeated complaints, nothing had been done to improve the safety of the route.
This unfortunate incident comes just two weeks after a similar tragedy occurred in Masai area, Taita Taveta, where a teacher lost their life and several students were injured in a road accident. That accident happened on July 4 while students were en route to a music festival, accompanied by the late teacher.
The injured in that case were rushed to Mikindani Hospital for treatment. Police later arrived at the scene and towed the damaged vehicle to the station for a full investigation.
Following the Ngong accident, Jomvu Member of Parliament Badi Twalib Bady visited the hospitalized students to check on their condition. He later went to the school, where he met concerned parents and the shaken school community, offering his support during the distressing moment.
