Well-known human rights activist Boniface Mwangi has allegedly been arrested by individuals believed to be officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
According to his wife, the arrest happened on Saturday afternoon at their home located in the Lukenya area of Mavoko Sub-County, Machakos County.
She said the officers stormed their home, took away Boniface’s personal electronic devices, and told her they were taking him to the DCI headquarters on Kiambu Road in Nairobi.
Deeply shaken, she condemned the arrest in strong terms, calling it a form of harassment and intimidation. She accused the authorities of treating Mwangi like a criminal without providing any justification.
“Police officers have come to our home, Courage Base, and taken away my husband. They are throwing around terms like ‘terrorism’ and ‘arson’. They’ve seized his devices and claimed they’re taking him to DCI headquarters. I can’t breathe,” she shared in distress.
Boniface Mwangi’s lawyer, James Kamau, also confirmed the incident. Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, Kamau said that the officers arrived at Mwangi’s residence without any prior notice, searched the entire house, and arrested him in front of his family.
The lawyer also pointed out that no clear explanation was given for the arrest at the time, leaving the family and legal team in the dark about the exact reason for the operation. Despite the confusion, Kamau assured the public that they were actively pursuing answers and working to clarify the circumstances surrounding Mwangi’s detention.
“We’re following up on this matter urgently to understand why Boniface has been taken and under what charges, if any,” the lawyer stated.
The sudden arrest of the outspoken activist has sparked concern among supporters and the human rights community, many of whom view it as yet another attempt to silence dissent through intimidation and fear.
