President Ruto Calls on Parents to Take Lead in Guiding the Youth Amid Rising Political Tension
President William Ruto has made a heartfelt appeal to all parents across Kenya, urging them to take a leading role in guiding and mentoring their children—especially the youth—during this period of heightened political tension in the country.
While addressing the public in Nairobi on Sunday, July 20, the president emphasized that the behavior, discipline, and overall well-being of children are largely influenced by the effort parents and guardians put into shaping their moral values and character.
Ruto stressed that parents cannot afford to step back and allow other parties to take over their parenting roles. He reminded families that raising a morally upright child starts at home and requires constant attention and responsibility from the parents themselves.
In addition to this message to parents, the president also called on other institutions—particularly the church—to remain active and alert in providing young people with the moral and spiritual guidance they need.
He noted that religious leaders play a crucial role in molding society and should continue to support families in nurturing the youth.
President Ruto assured the public that his government is committed to supporting the youth by providing key resources such as quality education, accessible healthcare, and other development opportunities.
He described the youth as vibrant, talented, and full of potential, noting that investing in them is essential to driving Kenya’s transformation in social, economic, and political spheres.
“Our children are the most valuable gift we have—both as families and as a nation—because they are blessings from God,” Ruto said. “As parents, it is our God-given duty to guide them.
Do not run away from that responsibility or hand it over to others, including the church or the government. You must actively raise your children.”
He added, “When God gave you that child, He knew you had the ability to care for and raise them. Don’t let your child fall into the wrong hands.
Remember the saying, ‘A child who is not guided by his or her parents will be taught by the world,’ and sometimes the world is not kind.”
Ruto also took the opportunity to speak on the importance of national unity and political stability. He urged fellow leaders and political influencers to act responsibly and avoid inciting the youth into violence or unrest. He warned that such actions could lead to serious and harmful consequences for the country and its future.
To reinforce law and order, the president made it clear that Kenya’s security agencies will continue doing their work to uphold peace and protect citizens. However, he clarified that the police are not meant to replace the role of parents in raising children.
“The police are trained to deal with criminals, not to raise children,” Ruto stated. “If you leave your children to be handled by the police, what outcome do you expect? Every parent must take the time and effort to guide their children in the right direction.”
His comments come shortly after a controversial directive he issued concerning protest-related violence.
Speaking in Nairobi on Wednesday, July 9, the president said law enforcement officers should shoot in the leg any individual who attempts to hijack peaceful protests and cause destruction or chaos, before proceeding with legal actions against them.
Ruto claimed that there are certain individuals secretly funding and organizing riots in the country, and warned that such behavior would no longer be tolerated by his government.
“If someone storms into a business or attacks a police station, they should be shot in the leg. After that, let them go to court and follow due process,” he declared.
Through his recent statements, President Ruto is making it clear that the responsibility of building a strong, united nation lies not only with the government but also with parents, religious institutions, and political leaders. By working together to mentor and protect the youth, the country can move forward in peace and prosperity.
