A 20-year-old man wanted for murder in the United States has been arrested in Kenya by agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and flown back to the U.S. to face serious criminal charges.
The suspect is accused of fatally shooting a woman outside a Costco store in Tukwila, Washington.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Seattle, the suspect was captured in Kenya with the help of local law enforcement and has since been extradited to the U.S.
He is currently being held at King County Jail in Seattle, and a U.S. court has set his bail at an enormous Ksh647.5 million (equivalent to USD 5 million).
The young man, along with a 20-year-old accomplice, is facing multiple charges, including first-degree murder, robbery, and attempted robbery. Authorities allege the duo was responsible for the killing of 67-year-old Yuam Ming during a violent confrontation.
Court documents reveal that the tragic incident took place on January 26, 2024. The suspect is said to have approached Yuam Ming and her sister as they were loading groceries into their car outside Costco. He reportedly tried to snatch a purse from Ming’s sister, and during the scuffle, he allegedly pulled out a firearm and fatally shot Ming.
Investigators believe the suspect wasn’t acting alone. His accomplice, also aged 20, is believed to have been the getaway driver in a Porsche SUV. Authorities say this vehicle had been carjacked from another woman earlier the same day in Seattle, just hours before the fatal shooting.
Only five days after the murder, the main suspect fled the U.S., boarding a flight from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. Authorities believe he left the country immediately after being identified on social media posts as a suspect in the murder case.
This triggered an extensive international manhunt that lasted several months. U.S. officials worked closely with Kenyan authorities and Interpol to locate and arrest the fugitive. After being tracked down in Kenya, he was arrested and later extradited back to the U.S. to stand trial.
Now that he’s back in the U.S., the suspect is expected to face trial in Washington State. Prosecutors plan to seek a heavy sentence if he is convicted. They argue that the killing was deliberate, cruel, and showed a clear disregard for human life.
To build their case, prosecutors are relying on multiple pieces of evidence. These include surveillance footage from nearby security cameras, dashcam recordings from the stolen getaway vehicle, and even body camera footage from a police officer who was chasing the suspects after the shooting occurred.
The King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office confirmed that the suspect’s next court appearance is yet to be scheduled. In addition to the state-level charges, he will also face a federal case for the carjacking incident linked to the murder.
