People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua has made it clear that she would only consider working with former Prime Minister Raila Odinga again if he completely cuts ties with President William Ruto and throws his support behind her 2027 presidential candidacy.
Speaking during an interview on Ramogi FM, Karua reflected on her past support for Raila’s presidential bids and said it was now time for him to return the favor.
She noted that she backed him out of admiration for his firm political principles and revolutionary zeal, especially for standing with the youth. But according to Karua, Raila has now shifted course by aligning with Ruto’s administration — a move she believes has deeply disappointed many young Kenyans who once looked up to him.
“I supported Raila when it mattered most, and now I expect the same from him,” Karua stated. “But first, he must abandon this partnership with Ruto. Only then can we consider working together again.”
She went on to say that her trust in Raila started to fade the moment he chose to cooperate with the Kenya Kwanza government, which she claims has failed the people and betrayed the aspirations of the youth.
Karua described Raila’s current closeness to President Ruto as a complete departure from his previous bold and unwavering political character.
“Raila used to stand firm for what was right. That’s the man I admired and supported,” Karua said. “But now, he seems to have softened, and is backing a government that has caused suffering to many young people across the country.”
The PLP leader’s comments come amid growing concerns within the Opposition about the direction Raila is taking, especially following recent public appearances with President Ruto — including the duo’s joint event in Homa Bay on May 30, 2025, where they commissioned a modern fish market at Koginga Pier.
Vows to Guard 2027 Election: A Parallel Electoral System in the Works
During the same interview, Karua also addressed the upcoming 2027 general election, stating that the Opposition would not sit back and watch the polls get manipulated. She declared that they are planning to set up a parallel vote tallying center as part of a broader plan to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process.
Karua said she regrets allowing the current regime to form the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) without full Opposition involvement. But she promised that this time, things would be different.
“This time, we will not be spectators,” Karua emphasized. “Even if Ruto himself chairs the Commission, the election will not be rigged. Kenyans are now more alert and ready to protect their votes.”
She assured citizens that the Opposition is united and determined to block any electoral malpractice by being extra vigilant. She encouraged voters to stay alert and actively participate in the democratic process to bring real change in 2027.
“We in the United Opposition are organizing ourselves. We are going to be very keen, and we’re setting up our own mechanisms to tally the results,” she said. “We are not going to allow any tricks. Kenyans have suffered enough, and this is our chance to take back control.”
Karua’s remarks have further fueled speculation about a possible realignment within the Opposition ahead of 2027, especially as she positions herself as a serious presidential contender who expects loyalty from those she once stood with — particularly Raila OdinKarua Sets Tough Conditions for Reuniting With Raila: “Only If He Ditches Ruto and Backs My Presidential Bid”
