Motorists were caught in chaos and left counting losses on Thursday afternoon, July 24, after violent protests erupted along Nairobi’s busy Outering Road.
The clashes, which took place around the Kariobangi–Kiamaiko–Allsops section, brought traffic to a standstill as rival youth gangs engaged in fierce confrontations, leaving the police struggling to restore order.
Eyewitnesses say the tension started after a suspected thief was allegedly lynched by a mob in the Kiamaiko area. This sparked outrage within one local community, whose members flooded the streets to demonstrate.
Videos captured by Kenyans.co.ke showed youths lighting fires in the middle of the highway, hurling stones, and attempting to stop vehicles. Some even tried to confront motorists and block them from passing.
As the unrest intensified, a second group—believed to be from a rival community—joined the fray, leading to a violent street brawl that turned the highway into a war zone. The identity of the second group remains unclear, but their involvement escalated the situation, making it more volatile and dangerous for anyone in the area.
In response to the escalating violence, the police deployed anti-riot units to the affected zones. However, by Thursday afternoon, calm had yet to be restored. Tensions remained high, and the threat of further violence loomed large.
The protests severely disrupted movement along Outering Road and nearby feeder roads, including those leading to Kariobangi and Allsops. The roads were completely impassable for several hours, with angry protesters erecting barricades, burning tyres, and pelting vehicles and pedestrians with stones.
Social media was flooded with security warnings, urging people to steer clear of the affected zones. One widely circulated alert read: “Avoid Outering Road, Kiamaiko, Kariobangi, and Allsops Road areas. Rival youth are fighting, and motorists are being robbed.”
This incident adds to the growing reputation of Outering Road as a flashpoint for protests and civil unrest. Just last month, on June 25, demonstrations in the same area took a violent turn, with a popular shoe store along the highway being looted and torched by angry protesters.
Outering Road has also seen residents take to the streets to protest frequent road accidents, especially along the Kariobangi-to-Mutindwa section. These protests often lead to road blockades, making the route unpredictable for regular commuters.
The recent unrest, fueled by anger over the alleged mob killing, once again highlights the fragile state of security in parts of Nairobi where ethnic tensions and social grievances can quickly ignite violent street confrontations.
