A tense situation in Trans Nzoia County was swiftly handled after police recovered a powerful illegal firearm that had been hidden at a local workplace. The discovery was made possible thanks to a tip-off from a concerned employer who suspected one of their employees was hiding a gun on the premises.
The National Police Service (NPS) confirmed the incident on Saturday, July 26, 2025. According to police reports, officers from Maili Saba Police Station acted immediately on the information provided by the employer on the evening of Friday, July 25.
Authorities stated that the employer had raised concerns about a staff member who was believed to be secretly keeping an unauthorized weapon at the work site. Acting swiftly, the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) led a team of officers to conduct a thorough search of the property.
During the operation, police uncovered a G3 assault rifle, fully loaded with 18 bullets. The weapon was expertly hidden in an unused chicken coop, wedged tightly between two flat doors that were not yet installed—making it very difficult to spot under normal circumstances.
Unfortunately, the suspect—believed to be the employee who hid the firearm—escaped before police could arrest them. The officers have since launched a manhunt, with the goal of tracking down the individual and questioning them about the illegal possession of the gun.
In an official communication, the NPS thanked the employer for their vigilance and encouraged other members of the public to continue supporting law enforcement efforts by reporting suspicious behavior. “The National Police Service remains focused on preventing illegal firearms from circulating among the public,” the statement read.
This latest seizure adds to a growing list of similar incidents involving G3 rifles in the region. Back in May 2023, police recovered another G3 rifle in Trans Nzoia after it was abandoned by an armed robber during a botched heist.
In a separate case in December 2024, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) also confiscated a G3 rifle with two rounds of ammunition while arresting robbery suspects in Samburu East.
The NPS reiterated its dedication to safeguarding communities and removing illegal weapons from circulation, urging citizens to continue cooperating by reporting any leads that could help in ongoing investigations.
