Police in Trans Nzoia Recover Loaded G3 Rifle Following Employer’s Tip-Off
A major security incident was narrowly avoided in Trans Nzoia County after police discovered a powerful G3 rifle hidden at a local workplace. The discovery was made possible after a vigilant employer raised concerns about one of their employees, triggering swift action from the authorities.
The National Police Service (NPS) confirmed the incident on Saturday, July 26, 2025. According to their report, the recovery followed a tip-off received the previous day at Maili Saba Police Station. The employer had grown suspicious that their staff member was secretly keeping an illegal firearm on the premises.
“Yesterday, police officers based at Maili Saba Police Station acted on a report from an employer who suspected one of their employees of possessing an illegal firearm,” the NPS stated. They further emphasized the value of public cooperation in boosting national security efforts.
Responding immediately, the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) led a team of officers to the workplace. After a thorough search, police uncovered the high-powered G3 rifle, fully loaded with 18 rounds of live ammunition.
The weapon had been expertly concealed inside a disused chicken coop, wedged between two flat, unmounted wooden doors, making it difficult to spot.
Unfortunately, before officers could arrest the suspect, the employee fled the scene. Police have since launched a manhunt to track down the runaway worker and determine how they came into possession of the dangerous weapon.
In a statement, the NPS reassured the public of their continued efforts to keep communities safe and urged members of the public to support investigations.
“The National Police Service remains firmly committed to ensuring illegal firearms are removed from the hands of criminals. We ask citizens to share any information that may help in the ongoing investigations,” the statement read.
This case adds to a growing list of illegal G3 rifle recoveries in the region. In May 2023, police retrieved a similar weapon in Trans Nzoia after it was abandoned during a botched robbery attempt.
Again, in December 2024, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) recovered another loaded G3 rifle while arresting robbery suspects in Samburu East.
These recurring recoveries point to a troubling trend, but also reflect the ongoing vigilance of both citizens and law enforcement. Authorities continue to encourage the public to report suspicious activity in their communities to help prevent firearms from being used in crimes.
