Amina Halake, the wife of former presidential hopeful Abduba Dida, has officially announced her bid for the presidency in the upcoming 2027 general elections.
Halake made the declaration during a Monday night interview on TV47, revealing that she would be contesting under the Alliance for Change political party— the same party that Dida led during his presidential campaigns in 2013 and 2017.
Previously serving as the party’s secretary general while her husband held the position of party leader, Halake disclosed that internal party elections had recently taken place, during which she was elected as the new leader of the party.
She emphasized her deep involvement in Dida’s past campaigns, noting that she not only managed party operations but also played a crucial role in coordinating campaign activities and handling Dida’s personal welfare at home.
“I was both his wife and the secretary general. I was hands-on in almost every part of the campaign—from planning strategies to taking care of things on the home front. So, there’s nothing about running a campaign that I don’t already know,” Halake confidently stated.
When asked whether her husband Dida would also be running again, she hinted at the possibility but noted that he had not made a clear decision yet.
“You know, old habits die hard,” she said, implying that Dida might still have presidential ambitions. However, she clarified that the leadership mantle had now shifted, and she was the one actively pushing the party forward.
At the moment, Dida is residing in the United States after serving three years of a seven-year sentence in a U.S. prison. He was convicted in 2021 for stalking and threatening his American wife, with whom he had previously lived in Illinois.
Halake mentioned that although she had lightly discussed her political ambitions with Dida, they hadn’t delved deeply into the matter, partly because he is still out of the country.
“He knows about the recent internal elections and that I’m now the party leader. He’s aware I’ve taken the reins and that I’m pursuing this journey,” she said.
Dida’s conviction stemmed from allegations that he violated a restraining order that his American wife had obtained. His family later claimed that he had unknowingly breached the order when he went to pray at a mosque near the area he was restricted from—an area reportedly frequented by his wife.
“He simply went to a mosque for prayers. Unfortunately, the mosque was close to where his wife—Mama Lila—was also known to visit, which led to the legal complications,” a family member explained in September 2024.
Dida was released in April 2025 after completing a three-year term at the Big Muddy Correctional Centre in Illinois. His future political role remains uncertain, but Amina Halake has already stepped into the spotlight, determined to carry the party’s torch and make her own mark on the 2027 presidential race.
