Kenya Railways Corporation has halted operations of its popular Nairobi-Kisumu Safari Train indefinitely, catching many passengers off guard and leaving thousands stranded. The sudden suspension has led to confusion, especially among regular travelers who rely on the service every weekend.
Frustrated customers flooded Kenya Railways’ social media platforms with complaints after showing up at the station only to find the train not operating. Many questioned why the train was no longer running, as they had not received any prior notice from the company.
In response, Kenya Railways confirmed the train service had indeed been suspended but did not provide specific reasons for the decision. Instead, the corporation stated that passengers would be officially notified once the service resumes.
“The Kisumu Safari Train is currently suspended until further notice. We will issue a public announcement once operations resume,” the corporation replied to one of the many concerned inquiries online.
Despite the growing number of affected passengers, the company has remained silent on the actual reason behind the suspension. One social media user asked directly, “Good morning, give me a reason why you stopped the Nairobi-Kisumu route,” but no explanation was provided.
The Nairobi-Kisumu Safari Train was a convenient weekend option for many travelers, departing every Friday evening at 6:30 PM and arriving in Kisumu at 6:30 AM the next morning.
Along the way, it would stop at key stations such as Naivasha, Nakuru, Njoro, Molo, Elburgon, Fort Ternan, Londiani, Muhoroni, Chemelil, Kibigori, Miwani, and Kibos, allowing for both drop-offs and pick-ups.
The return journey from Kisumu to Nairobi was scheduled every Sunday, departing Kisumu at 6:30 PM and arriving in Nairobi at approximately 6:35 AM the next day. This routine made the train an essential travel solution for many Kenyans, especially those commuting for work, business, or family reasons.
This isn’t the first time that the Nairobi-Kisumu train service has been suspended. In the past, it has been temporarily halted for reasons ranging from rehabilitation works on the railway line, flooding due to heavy rains, and track damage.
Interestingly, this marks the second time in just one month that Kenya Railways has suspended a major passenger train service. Earlier in the month, the corporation also canceled several of its other routes, including the popular 10 PM Madaraka Express from Mombasa to Nairobi.
Most of the recent train cancellations were reportedly linked to national protests, such as those that took place during the Saba Saba demonstrations. These protests disrupted not only train schedules but also road transport in multiple parts of the country, further complicating travel for many citizens.
Passengers are now left in limbo, awaiting updates from Kenya Railways, as the suspension continues to affect their travel plans without any clear explanation or timeline for when normal service will resume.
