Chief Justice Martha Koome Mourns the Death of Former MP
Chief Justice Martha Koome has written a heartfelt message of condolence following the death of Catherine Nyamato, who was the first woman from the Gusii region to serve as a Member of Parliament in Kenya.
In a statement released on August 7, CJ Koome paid tribute to Nyamato, describing her as a courageous and influential leader who played a major role in pushing for women’s rights in the country.
Nyamato, who sadly passed away on July 16, was a nominated MP between 1997 and 2002 during President Daniel Arap Moi’s leadership under the then-ruling KANU party.
“On behalf of the entire Judiciary and in my personal capacity, I join the rest of the country and the wider women’s movement in mourning the passing of Hon. Catherine Nyamato. She was a true pioneer and an unwavering defender of women’s rights. I offer my sincere condolences to her family, friends, and everyone whose life she impacted,” Koome expressed in her moving tribute.
CJ Koome went on to highlight Nyamato’s fearless stand against harmful cultural practices, especially Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), and her deep commitment to promoting the rights and welfare of women and girls across Kenya.
She also praised Nyamato’s generous heart and her support for vulnerable people in society. Koome noted that the late MP often provided financial help to the less fortunate, which enabled many individuals to sustain themselves and improve their lives.
Reflecting on their personal and professional relationship, Koome recalled working with Nyamato in civil society groups long before either of them rose to high office. She described Nyamato as someone she came to know closely and fondly over the years. Their friendship, she said, was one she treasured deeply.
“I will always remember Catherine with deep respect, admiration, and gratitude. She leaves behind a powerful legacy of compassion, leadership, and tireless service to others. Her memory will continue to inspire and encourage future generations,” CJ Koome stated.
Nyamato’s death occurred on July 16 when she suddenly collapsed by the roadside near her farm in Kijauri, Nyamira County. She had been interacting with young people who were working on a community project at the time. She was quickly taken to Summit Hospital in the area but was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Besides her time in Parliament, Nyamato held several leadership roles within political and civic organisations. She was the National Women Leader for Narc-Kenya and also served as the Secretary General of the League of Kenyan Women Voters, where she continued her advocacy for gender equality and women’s empowerment.
Her passing is not only a loss to her community and the country, but to all who believe in the fight for justice, dignity, and equal rights for women.
