New information has come to light following a tragic plane crash in the Mwihoko area near Githurai 45, located in Kiambu County. The aircraft involved in the accident has now been confirmed to belong to the African Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF) Flying Doctors service.
In an official statement, AMREF revealed that the ill-fated plane was a Cessna Citation XLS. It had departed from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport at around 2:17 pm and was on a mission heading to Hargeisa, Somalia. Unfortunately, it crashed shortly after takeoff under still unclear circumstances.
Reports from the scene confirmed that two people lost their lives instantly during the crash. Additionally, two other individuals sustained severe injuries and are currently undergoing treatment in critical condition at a local medical facility.
The identities of the victims have not yet been made public as families are still being informed.
The remains of the deceased were promptly recovered, and AMREF has announced that investigations are actively ongoing to uncover the exact cause of the accident.
In their statement, the organization emphasized their full cooperation with aviation authorities and emergency teams to get to the bottom of what led to the tragic event.
“Our priority right now is the safety, recovery, and emotional support of those who were on board,” AMREF said. “We are also standing by the affected families and our staff during this difficult time, and we continue to offer full support to the ongoing investigations.”
The organization also urged members of the public to remain patient and allow the authorities to carry out a thorough and respectful examination of the crash scene.
They called for calm and understanding as professionals handle the sensitive situation.
Videos and photos recorded by bystanders have been circulating widely on social media, showing intense rescue operations.
Security personnel, including police officers and members of the military, could be seen working hard to manage the scene as curious residents gathered nearby, kept at bay by security lines.
Eyewitnesses gave chilling accounts of what they saw. Some residents said they noticed the aircraft flying unusually low just moments before it plummeted to the ground and exploded into flames.
“There was a loud bang, and we all ran towards the sound,” said one Githurai resident. “By the time we got there, the aircraft was burning. You could see some of the bodies clearly.”
In response to the crash, local police have sealed off the entire area to allow uninterrupted investigation by the relevant authorities.
Residents have been strongly warned to stay away from the scene unless they have special clearance to be there.
Sadly, this incident adds to the growing number of aviation accidents involving light aircraft in Kenya this year. While such crashes are not uncommon, each brings a renewed focus on aviation safety and the need for constant vigilance in air travel operations.
