Tragedy in Naivasha: Several Killed After Train Rams Into Kenya Pipeline Bus
At least six people lost their lives on Thursday afternoon after a tragic collision between a cargo train and a Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) staff bus at the Morendat Junction railway crossing in Naivasha.
According to eyewitnesses, the accident happened when the white KPC bus, which had several passengers on board, attempted to cross the railway line despite the approaching train.
Although the train driver reportedly slammed on the emergency brakes, the distance was too short for the train to come to a complete stop, resulting in a devastating crash.
Witnesses at the scene confirmed that at least six people had died, with many others injured. However, the exact number of casualties was still unclear as emergency teams continued rescue operations.
Police officers were quickly deployed to manage the chaotic situation and direct traffic, as the accident caused a major snarl-up along the busy route.
Exclusive footage obtained by Newshub.co.ke showed the bus completely wrecked, with large sections of it torn apart by the force of the impact.
The front and side of the vehicle were severely mangled, indicating the intensity of the collision. In contrast, the train appeared to suffer minimal damage. Area residents and emergency responders were seen working tirelessly to pull survivors from the wreckage.
In an official statement, the Kenya Pipeline Company confirmed the incident, noting that it took place just before the Morendat Training and Conference Centre, where the railway line intersects with the road. The bus, according to the company, was ferrying employees who had just completed their morning shift.
KPC stated that they immediately dispatched a rescue team to the site and ensured that the injured were quickly evacuated to hospitals in Naivasha for treatment.
The company also said it was coordinating closely with local authorities and medical teams to provide urgent care, including arranging for airlifts for those critically injured.
“Our deepest thoughts and prayers are with our colleagues and their families during this difficult time,” KPC said in its statement. “We are committed to supporting all those affected and are working closely with relevant authorities to manage the situation effectively.”
Investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing as the country mourns the loss of lives in yet another road-railway tragedy.
