Ex-Parliament Security Boss Mourns 25 Relatives Lost in Kisumu Road Tragedy
A deep wave of grief has engulfed the family of Maj. (Rtd) Solomon Obange, a former Head of Security at the National Assembly, and Dr. Dick Obange of Maseno University, after a horrific road accident claimed the lives of 25 of their relatives. The fatal crash happened at the Coptic Roundabout in Kisumu on Friday evening.
The tragedy struck as a bus carrying 61 family members was returning home from a burial ceremony in Nyahera, Kisumu West sub-county, and heading towards Nyakach.
Witnesses reported that the bus lost control while navigating the busy roundabout. It veered off the road, smashed into several roadside structures, and eventually overturned, leaving a trail of destruction and sorrow.
In a heartfelt message shared on X (formerly Twitter), Internal Security Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo expressed his deep condolences to the Obange family.
He acknowledged the immense pain of losing so many loved ones in a single incident and promised to work closely with the Kisumu County Government and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) to support the bereaved family.
“No words are enough to describe our pain as we mourn with the family and friends of Maj. (Rtd) Solomon Obange, who served as Parliament’s Head of Security from 2012 to 2014, and Dr. Dick Obange of Maseno University, who have lost 25 relatives in the tragic Kisumu road accident,” PS Omollo wrote. “We stand with them in this dark hour and will extend every possible assistance.”
According to an update posted on August 8 by JOOTRH, the hospital initially received victims from the crash with reports confirming 21 deaths and 21 people injured. Sadly, the death toll later rose to 25, with several victims still receiving medical care.
The Kenya Red Cross confirmed in its own statement that it had worked alongside the County Government of Kisumu and the National Police Service to respond to the accident in Mamboleo. Thirty-three injured passengers were evacuated to JOOTRH for urgent treatment.
President William Ruto also reacted to the tragedy, sending his condolences to the affected families. He directed traffic enforcement officers to strengthen road safety operations to help prevent similar devastating accidents in the future.
This road crash now stands as one of the most painful incidents to strike a single family in recent memory, leaving the nation shocked and mourning alongside the Obange family.
