Kakamega Drama as Lugari MP Nabii Nabwera Confronts Residents Over ‘Wantam’ Chants
A political rally in Kakamega turned tense after Lugari MP Nabii Nabwera clashed with residents who repeatedly chanted “Wantam” during his speech.
The slogan, a popular political catchphrase derived from “Ruto Tutam”—meaning “We will go with Ruto”—is widely used by President William Ruto’s supporters to declare their political loyalty.
The drama unfolded as Nabwera addressed the crowd, emphasizing that he and other MPs had resolved to work with President Ruto’s government to push for development in their constituencies. However, the loud chants of “Wantam” from sections of the audience disrupted his speech.
Visibly irritated, the MP warned the crowd, asking how many “mak3nde” (a slang insult) they had, and at one point threatening to deal with hecklers.
Nabwera insisted that leadership should be judged by the ability to bring maendeleo (development) rather than political slogans. He urged residents to elect leaders who could deliver tangible projects instead of focusing on political rivalry and roadside declarations.
The exchange nearly turned chaotic as the MP appeared to lose his temper, sparking an uproar in the crowd.
The incident has since stirred mixed reactions online, with some defending Nabwera’s push for development-focused politics, while others criticized his choice of words towards the constituents.
This confrontation reflects the growing tension in some parts of the country, where chants like “Wantam” are increasingly being used as a political test of loyalty, often putting leaders in uncomfortable positions during public gatherings.
