At least three Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) were injured and rushed to hospital after violence erupted during the tense impeachment session of Kericho Governor Erick Mutai.
The incident took place on August 15 inside the Kericho County Assembly, moments after the Speaker announced the results of a motion that confirmed Governor Mutai had been impeached for the second time. The declaration sparked immediate chaos, with political tensions boiling over into a physical confrontation.
A video shared with Newshub.co.ke captured the dramatic incident, showing what began as a heated political debate turning into a violent brawl. In the footage, rival MCAs can be seen trading punches as shouting and screaming fill the chamber.
At the height of the commotion, objects were seen being hurled across the room. In the midst of the disorder, several MCAs sustained injuries and were quickly taken to a nearby hospital to receive medical assistance.
The impeachment motion was tabled by Sigowet MCA Kiprotich Rogony and passed with overwhelming support from the Assembly.
A total of 33 out of 47 MCAs voted in favour of removing Governor Mutai, while 14 voted against him. The tally exceeded the required two-thirds majority needed to successfully impeach a county governor.
Although the specific accusations behind the impeachment and the deeper causes of the chaos are still being revealed, it is clear that emotions were running extremely high. The injured leaders were promptly given medical care following the brawl.
This marks the governor’s second impeachment. During his previous impeachment attempt, Governor Mutai was saved by the Senate even though 31 MCAs had voted against him. This time, with even more support for the motion, the political stakes were higher than ever.
Following the vote, the Speaker of the Assembly officially referred the matter to the Senate. Governor Mutai will now have the chance to defend himself before the Senate.
If the Senate agrees with the county assembly’s decision, he will be permanently removed from office. However, if the Senate overturns the motion, he will retain his position.
The entire day was marked by heightened tension across Kericho County. Earlier in the day, there were reports of an attempt to burn down the county assembly building and street fights involving political supporters.
Because of the rising unrest, a heavy police presence was deployed to the area to try to maintain order even before the assembly session began.
The chaotic scenes inside the chamber, combined with the violence outside, reflect the deep political divisions within the county and the growing instability surrounding Governor Mutai’s leadership.
