A dramatic scene unfolded on the night of Tuesday, August 19, 2025, when an angry crowd apprehended a man who allegedly posed as a police officer and was seen assaulting a young boy.
The incident, captured on video and shared widely online, shows the suspect wearing what looked like a police uniform. Members of the public claimed they spotted him roughing up the boy.
Concerned citizens quickly surrounded the man and demanded that he rush the young boy to the hospital for treatment.
In footage reviewed by Newshub.co.ke, the crowd can be heard shouting at the suspect as he tries to defend himself. At one point, the man claimed that he worked at Kamukunji Police Station, but the crowd did not believe him and pressed for answers.
So far, it remains unclear what led to the confrontation or what the boy had done prior to the assault. The police have not yet issued any official statement regarding the case.
Fake Identity Exposed
When members of the public asked the suspect to prove his identity, they noticed something suspicious — the names on his national ID and the supposed police ID he was carrying did not match. At first, the man insisted both documents belonged to him, claiming that he had been given the police ID at the station.
However, after intense questioning, he changed his story and finally admitted that he was not a real police officer. He pleaded with the crowd to forgive him, begging for mercy as people shouted angrily around him.
Similar Incident in Kirinyaga
This recent case comes only a few months after another incident involving a fake officer was reported in Kirinyaga County. In that case, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) arrested a man who had been posing as a police officer.
According to authorities, officers received intelligence reports and arrested the suspect in Kirinyaga East Sub-County. After interrogation, he led them to his house located in Makongeni area of Thika, where a shocking discovery was made.
Recovery of Police Gear and Government Items
During the search of his home, detectives recovered numerous government-issued items. These included:
- Two police smoke jackets
- Two pairs of jungle green trousers
- A green prison lanyard
- Desert military boots
- A replica firearm
- And several other government-related items
Part of the official police report stated:
“Detectives in Kirinyaga East Sub-County have apprehended a man posing as a police officer, recovering several government stores in the process. Acting on intelligence reports, detectives arrested the man who, after interrogation, led them to his residence in Thika’s Makongeni area. A search of his premises yielded a trove of government stores, including two police smoke jackets, two jungle green trousers, a green prison lanyard, desert military boots, and a replica firearm, among other items.”
Public Concern Growing
The two incidents have raised public concern about the increasing cases of individuals impersonating police officers.
Many Kenyans are now questioning how easy it has become for criminals to access police uniforms and equipment, which they use to intimidate or harm innocent citizens.
As investigations continue, the public is calling on the authorities to crack down on fake officers and ensure that anyone caught impersonating law enforcement faces the full force of the law.
