Ruto Pledges Extra Thank You Package to Harambee Stars Despite CHAN Exit
President William Ruto has assured the Harambee Stars that they will receive an additional thank-you package as recognition for their impressive performance at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), even though the team did not progress further in the tournament.
The promise was delivered to the players on Friday, August 22, shortly after their match, through Deputy President Kithure Kindiki. While addressing the squad, Kindiki conveyed the President’s message, emphasizing that Kenyans were proud of how the Stars had represented the nation on the continental stage.
“Forget about the motivation and the other things in between. The President has said he wants to build on the pride, honour, and unity you have brought to our country. He will be reaching out to you through the leadership and the Ministry to give you a thank-you package,” Kindiki told the players.
President Ruto’s Praise from Japan
President Ruto, who is currently on an official trip to Japan, issued a statement applauding the national team for their courage and determination. He highlighted that the Harambee Stars had exceeded expectations and given Kenyans hope.
“We had a remarkable run. Harambee Stars have silenced the doubters, lifted the spirit of an entire nation, and reminded us all that when Kenyans play with courage, confidence, and determination, nothing is impossible,” the President said.
The Head of State has been a consistent supporter of the national team throughout the tournament. From the early stages of CHAN, he not only encouraged them but also promised and delivered rewards to motivate the players and coaching staff.
Reactions From Leaders Across the Nation
Despite Kenya’s exit from the competition, political leaders and fans from across the country showered the Harambee Stars with praise for their resilience and the strong display they put up against seasoned African opponents.
ODM Party Leader Raila Odinga was among the first to congratulate the team. He said, “Hongera Harambee Stars for a good display of football. You have managed to unite Kenyans and make the country proud.”
Deputy President Kindiki also took the opportunity to encourage the team to keep their spirits high and begin preparing for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which Kenya will also co-host.
“We congratulate you on behalf of all Kenyans. Even though we lost, you have made history. We have not felt such pride in our national team for a long time, and today you have given us that joy,” Kindiki noted.
Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya also praised the players, describing them as true winners despite the elimination. He said, “Though the journey ends here, you walk away as winners.
You have proven our resilience, our heart, and our unyielding belief that we belong at the very top. This is not the end, but the beginning of a brighter future for Kenyan football.”
Other leaders, including Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, echoed similar sentiments, stressing that the team had given their all and that Kenyans were proud of them regardless of the result.
President Calls for Continued Fan Support
President Ruto further appealed to Kenyans to keep supporting the tournament by filling up stadiums, noting that Kenya still has the honour of being one of the hosts of the historic Pamoja CHAN competition.
“Though we are out of the tournament, we remain the proud co-hosts of the historic Pamoja CHAN. Let us continue to fill Kasarani with cheer, energy, pride, and love for the game — all the way to the final whistle,” the President urged.
The President’s words, along with messages from leaders and fans, have reinforced the belief that the Harambee Stars are on the right path.
Their fighting spirit, teamwork, and discipline have not only boosted Kenya’s image in African football but also rekindled hope for a stronger showing in future competitions, especially the 2027 AFCON on home soil.
