South African High Commissioner to Kenya Dies While Being Rushed to Hospital

South Africa’s High Commissioner to Kenya, Mninwa Johannes Mahlangu, has passed away following a brief illness while on his way to a hospital in South Africa.

In a statement, South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola, described Mahlangu as a committed public servant and devoted family man.

He said the country has lost a remarkable patriot whose dedication to serving South Africa was evident in the way he carried out his diplomatic responsibilities.

“Ambassador Mahlangu was a true patriot whose deep love for our nation was reflected in his tireless work to advance South Africa’s foreign policy,” Minister Lamola noted.

Mahlangu, affectionately known as “MJ,” had been serving as South Africa’s High Commissioner to Kenya. In addition, he was accredited as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Somalia and represented South Africa at the United Nations Office in Nairobi (UNON).

His diplomatic career extended beyond Africa, including a notable tenure as South Africa’s Ambassador to the United States of America.

Born on October 8, 1952, in Middleburg, Mpumalanga, Mahlangu dedicated his life to public service from an early age. His journey began during the struggle years, where he was active as a student activist. Later, he transitioned into politics and played a significant role in shaping South Africa’s post-apartheid constitution.

He became a member of the Constitutional Assembly tasked with drafting the nation’s new constitution, chairing the Core Group of the Theme Committee and the Theme Committee on Structures of Government.

During his time in Parliament, Mahlangu also served as Chairperson of Committees, helping to guide legislative processes and uphold democratic governance.

In 2002, he was elected as the permanent Deputy Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces (NCOP), a position he retained following the 2004 elections. In January 2005, he was elected Chairperson of the NCOP, reflecting the high regard in which he was held by his peers.

Mahlangu was a member of South Africa’s first democratic parliament in 1994 and later served in the National Council of Provinces, first as Deputy Chairperson and then as Chairperson.

His leadership roles in government highlighted his commitment to democratic principles and public service.

As a career diplomat, Mahlangu played a crucial role in strengthening South Africa’s relations with Kenya and promoting cooperation across the East African region. His efforts extended beyond formal diplomacy, leaving a lasting impact on regional partnerships and South Africa’s international standing.

The South African government paid tribute to his decades-long dedication, emphasizing that his contributions went far beyond diplomacy. Mahlangu was instrumental in shaping the democratic foundations of South Africa and leaving a legacy of leadership, patriotism, and service to both his country and the wider region.
