Goons Torch Isiolo County Office as Political Tensions Escalate
Political tensions in Isiolo County took a dangerous turn on Wednesday, August 27, after part of the County Assembly Clerk’s office was set ablaze in a shocking incident.
Photos and videos seen by Newshub.co.ke captured the office engulfed in flames, coming only hours after a group of rowdy youths stormed the County Assembly chambers and vandalized property. The coordinated attacks left the Assembly in chaos, raising concerns about growing lawlessness in the county’s political standoff.
By the time of reporting, it was still not clear whether the same individuals who invaded the Assembly were behind the fire that consumed the Clerk’s office.
Authorities have also not confirmed the full extent of the damage caused by the blaze, leaving many unanswered questions about the security of county institutions.
The torching of the office happened just a few hours after a dramatic twist involving the County Assembly Speaker, Mohamed Roba. Roba, who has been at the center of political wrangles in Isiolo, was arrested while on his way to Nairobi.
According to officials, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) intercepted him along Thika Road and later took him to Ruaraka Police Station. His arrest ended earlier speculation circulating among locals and leaders that he might have been abducted.
Barely hours after his detention, tension spilled over into the Assembly. In broad daylight, unidentified goons stormed into the chambers, overturning desks, destroying documents, and vandalizing property.
Their actions brought Assembly business to a complete halt, making it impossible for Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) to conduct any formal proceedings.
The events of Wednesday — the Speaker’s arrest, the invasion of the Assembly, and the fire incident — have fueled an already volatile political atmosphere in Isiolo.
The county has in recent weeks been marked by sharp divisions and confrontations. This tension traces back to the controversial impeachment of Governor Abdi Guyo by the County Assembly, a move that was later overturned when the Senate reinstated him to office.
These developments highlight the deep cracks within Isiolo’s leadership and the fragile state of its politics.
The string of violent incidents is now raising concerns among residents, civil society groups, and security officials about whether the county’s leadership crisis could spiral into more widespread unrest if not resolved quickly.
