Former Nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba on Wednesday morning caused drama at the Parliament Buildings after she was denied access to the Senate chambers during the ongoing plenary session on the impeachment of Kericho Governor Eric Mutai.
The standoff began when security officers stationed at the main gates stopped her from entering, despite Orwoba presenting a court order that she claimed reinstated her position as a senator.
The officers reportedly stood their ground, insisting that they had not received any formal instructions from the Senate leadership to allow her inside.
Orwoba, visibly agitated, tried to plead with the guards, but her efforts bore no fruit. Addressing journalists moments later outside the Parliament gates, the former legislator accused the Senate of openly disregarding the law and undermining the authority of the courts.
According to her, Senate Speaker Amason Kingi had acted unconstitutionally by allowing Consolata Nabwire, the newly nominated senator, to participate in the impeachment proceedings.
Orwoba described Nabwire as a “stranger” in the House, arguing that the decision to conduct the sitting in her presence was a serious violation of parliamentary procedures and the Constitution.
She went further to urge Kericho residents to remain vigilant and reject the Senate process, insisting that what was unfolding was both illegal and a betrayal of the people.
“As long as Consolata is sitting in the Senate now, that sitting is unlawful. She is a stranger on the floor of the House, and no impeachment can proceed with a stranger inside,” Orwoba said passionately.
She accused Speaker Kingi of promoting impunity, adding that the leadership of the Senate was misleading Kenyans. “The Speaker of the Senate, Amason Kingi, continues to entertain lawlessness.
The people of Kericho should know that they are being shortchanged because whatever is happening inside the Senate is unlawful,” she declared.
This confrontation comes only a week after the Political Parties Dispute Tribunal delivered a ruling in Orwoba’s favor. The tribunal ordered the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) to reverse all disciplinary actions it had taken against her, stating that the entire process was flawed.
In its findings, the tribunal noted that Orwoba had not been given a fair hearing. It revealed that UDA’s internal disciplinary process was riddled with legal and procedural irregularities, with the former senator being denied access to the ruling of the party’s disciplinary committee.
This, according to the tribunal, prevented her from filing an appeal against the decision.
The tribunal further criticized UDA’s actions as politically driven, saying that the disciplinary case appeared to have been influenced by internal politics rather than justice.
With this ruling, Orwoba has maintained that she is still legally a senator and should be allowed to participate fully in Senate proceedings.
