Some households living in arid and semi-arid areas will soon start receiving Ksh2,700 each from the government as part of the latest round of support under the Hunger Safety Net Programme (HSNP).
The National Drought Management Authority (NDMA) announced on Tuesday, September 2, that the government had released Ksh294.5 million to benefit 109,072 households spread across eight arid counties.
According to the NDMA, the money will reflect in the bank accounts of the targeted families by Wednesday, September 3. Beneficiaries will be able to withdraw their stipends through selected bank agents and branches located in their counties.
The agency explained that this support is part of the government’s ongoing plan to cushion vulnerable families from the severe effects of drought, food insecurity, and poverty in northern Kenya.
The eight counties benefiting from this programme are Garissa, Isiolo, Mandera, Marsabit, Samburu, Tana River, Turkana, and Wajir.
Among them, Mandera County will get the biggest allocation of Ksh59.6 million, which will be shared among 22,102 households. Marsabit follows with Ksh55 million for 20,388 households, while Wajir County will receive Ksh51.7 million for 19,162 families.
Other allocations include Turkana County, which has been given Ksh43.5 million to cover 16,142 households. Garissa will receive Ksh24.8 million for 9,214 households, while Samburu County has been allocated Ksh21.9 million to support 8,115 households.
At the same time, Isiolo County will receive Ksh17.8 million, and Tana River County has been given Ksh19.7 million to assist vulnerable families.
The NDMA emphasized that each selected household is entitled to a monthly stipend of Ksh2,700 under the HSNP.
The programme falls under the broader Kenya Social and Economic Inclusion Project (KSEIP), which is part of the government’s Inua Jamii social protection programme.
The aim is to provide financial relief and a sense of stability to families living in regions that often face recurring droughts and lack of income opportunities.
Beneficiaries who face challenges in accessing their cash have been advised to visit the nearest bank branch to update their personal details. This will ensure that they continue receiving their monthly payments without any interruptions.
Apart from providing financial assistance, the government has also outlined major development projects to uplift the lives of residents in arid and semi-arid regions.
On Tuesday, President William Ruto announced that the government will carry out a major infrastructure overhaul of the Maili Tisa–Kitale–Kainuk–Lokichar Road.
The project is expected to improve transport, connect the region to wider markets, and create more economic opportunities.
Additionally, President Ruto revealed that the government has set aside Ksh2.3 billion for rural electrification, which will help bring power to remote villages and trading centers.
He also announced Ksh900 million for the construction of a modern stadium in Lodwar, alongside Ksh2.5 billion for the expansion of the Turkwel Irrigation Scheme.
The irrigation project is expected to bring over 100,000 acres of land into productive farming, boosting food security and income for residents.
The President further outlined more initiatives, including the construction of two modern fish markets worth Ksh700 million, the upgrading and equipping of the Lodwar County Referral Hospital, and the construction of hostels worth Ksh2.3 billion to provide safe and dignified housing for university and college students in the region.
Through these combined efforts — cash transfers, infrastructure upgrades, irrigation, health facilities, and education support — the government aims not only to provide immediate relief but also to lay the foundation for long-term development in Kenya’s arid and semi-arid regions.
