Murang’a MCAs Reject Ruto’s Invitation Amid Claims of Ksh300,000 Bribe

Murang’a MCAs Decline Ruto’s State House Invitation Amid Bribery Allegations

Some Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) from Murang’a County have openly rejected an invitation to attend a meeting at State House, Nairobi, alleging that the invitation came with a promise of cash rewards. The MCAs claimed they were offered Ksh300,000 each as an inducement to honour the invitation, a move they described as a misuse of public funds.

Speaking on Friday, September 12, the group of MCAs, who were in the company of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, accused President William Ruto of encouraging corruption at the highest level of government.

They argued that instead of addressing the economic and social challenges affecting ordinary citizens, the presidency had turned into a hub of bribery.

Kariara Ward MCA, Gichofe Mbatia, explained that every MCA from Murang’a had received a direct call inviting them to State House.

According to him, the invite came with a promise of Ksh300,000 per MCA. “We are here today as representatives of the Murang’a County Assembly, and it is important for the country to know that we were all contacted and promised money to attend a meeting at State House. Each MCA was told they would receive Ksh300,000,” he stated.

Mbatia added that the MCAs collectively chose not to attend the meeting, arguing that the alleged money was sourced from corruption.

He claimed the funds being distributed were supposed to be used for important public services such as education capitation and healthcare, but were instead being diverted into bribery schemes. “These honourable members resolved that they would not take part in receiving money that clearly comes from graft.

That money belongs to schools, hospitals, and other services for Kenyans, but it is being misused as bribes at State House,” he emphasized.

Instead of attending Ruto’s meeting, the MCAs decided to pay a visit to Rigathi Gachagua, whom they described as their political leader and the person they believe should become Kenya’s next President.

During the meeting with the MCAs, Gachagua launched a sharp attack on Ruto, accusing him of turning State House into what he called a “money laundering centre.” He alleged that in almost every meeting held at State House, Ruto dishes out at least Ksh60 million to different groups of leaders.

Although Gachagua did not provide evidence to back up his claims, he insisted that his mission is to challenge Ruto’s leadership and ensure he serves only one term, vowing to mount a strong political fight ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Meanwhile, President Ruto on the same day hosted a separate group of leaders from Murang’a at State House. According to a statement released after the meeting, the President explained that the discussions were centred on his administration’s development agenda for Murang’a County.

Ruto highlighted that his government had set aside Ksh23 billion for the construction of 10,300 affordable houses across the county.

He also announced an allocation of Ksh3.5 billion for road upgrades, Ksh2.3 billion for the establishment of 23 modern markets, and Ksh3 billion for the construction of new student hostels.

Additionally, the President revealed plans to connect more than 10,000 households to electricity by December under a Ksh850 million electrification programme.

He also promised to build two modern stadiums worth Ksh1.5 billion and announced that his government would implement a Ksh2.4 billion water project to supply clean water to residents in Kangema, Mathioya, Kiharu, and Kandara constituencies.
