Politician Arrested as Probe into Lawyer Mbobu’s Murder Intensifies
The investigations into the shocking murder of city lawyer Kyalo Mbobu have taken a dramatic turn after police arrested George Wainaina, the Secretary General of the Kenya African National Union (KANU), alongside two other individuals on Thursday evening.
Reports indicate that Wainaina was among the last people to interact with Mbobu before he was gunned down by unknown attackers on Tuesday, September 9. Sources revealed that the politician had shared a meal with the lawyer at a Nairobi hotel just hours before the fatal shooting.
Authorities are now trying to piece together the lawyer’s final movements, with detectives keen to establish whether Wainaina or the other suspects might have crucial information that could help unmask the killers.
Lawyer Confirms Arrest but Demands Clarity
Wainaina’s legal representative, Maulid Musa, confirmed his client’s arrest but noted that the police had not disclosed the exact charges.
“My client, George Wainaina, was picked from his Karen home last evening. Up to now, we have not been told what charges, if any, he is facing,” Musa said.
He added that while the ongoing murder probe is legitimate and deeply troubling, investigators had yet to confirm whether Wainaina’s arrest is directly tied to Mbobu’s killing.
Following his arrest, Wainaina was first taken to Kileleshwa Police Station, but later rushed to hospital after reportedly developing health complications. The other two suspects are being held separately at Kilimani Police Station and Capital Hill Police Station.
How Mbobu Was Killed
Lawyer Mbobu was brutally shot in a drive-by attack on the evening of September 9 while driving home along Magadi Road, near the Galleria Brookside area in Karen. Eyewitness accounts suggest that a vehicle pulled up alongside his car before gunmen sprayed it with bullets.
An autopsy conducted afterwards revealed the gruesome details: Mbobu had been shot eight times, suffering massive internal bleeding and severe injuries. Pathologists managed to recover two bullets lodged in his body.
Detectives believe the attack was carefully planned, as CCTV footage obtained earlier showed a suspicious man dressed in black following the lawyer when he left his office hours before his murder.
The Lawyer’s Final Hours
Before his death, Mbobu is said to have attended a meeting with unidentified people at a city hotel. After leaving, he reportedly drove into Nairobi’s CBD for another engagement before heading towards his home in Karen. Investigators suspect these meetings could hold critical clues about what led to his killing.
Public Outcry and Demand for Justice
The legal fraternity has reacted strongly to the killing. On Friday, lawyers led by Faith Odhiambo, the President of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), staged peaceful demonstrations in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD).
The lawyers carried placards and chanted slogans, demanding swift investigations and justice for their slain colleague.
According to the LSK, Mbobu’s death represents not only a tragic loss to the legal community but also a chilling reminder of the growing insecurity facing professionals in the country.
What Next in the Investigations?
Police say the probe is far from over as they continue to review CCTV footage, question witnesses, and analyze Mbobu’s last interactions. The arrest of Wainaina and the two other individuals is expected to shed more light on the murder plot, but detectives remain cautious, insisting that no conclusions can be drawn until all facts are verified.
Meanwhile, Kenyans are watching closely, waiting for answers in a case that has exposed deep concerns about personal security and the lengths to which criminal networks may go.
