JSC Promotes 117 Judicial Officers Across the Country
The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has announced the promotion of 117 Judicial Officers to higher positions within the Judiciary.
In a statement released on Thursday, September 18, JSC Secretary Winfridah Mokaya confirmed that the promotions followed a series of interviews conducted between August 4 and August 13, 2025.
She explained that the recommendations were later discussed and approved by the Commission during its meetings held on September 11 and September 15. The promotions officially took effect immediately after the ratification.
According to Mokaya, the promotions were spread across several ranks in the Judiciary. Nine officers were elevated to the position of Chief Magistrate, while 67 were promoted to Senior Principal Magistrates.
Six officers rose to the position of Principal Magistrates, 15 were appointed as Senior Principal Kadhi, and 20 others advanced to the rank of Principal Kadhi.
“The Judicial Service Commission has approved the promotion of 117 Judicial Officers after thorough interviews. These promotions, which took effect immediately upon approval, reflect the Commission’s recognition of individual performance, dedication, and service delivery in previous roles,” Mokaya stated.
She further emphasized that the decision was not just about career growth for the officers but also part of a broader plan to strengthen the Judiciary’s ability to serve Kenyans more effectively.
By raising officers to higher positions, the Commission hopes to improve the efficiency of the courts and enhance access to justice across the country.
“These advancements highlight the Commission’s commitment to rewarding excellence, promoting career progression, and strengthening judicial capacity. They also reaffirm our focus on integrity, accountability, and service delivery to the people of Kenya,” Mokaya added.
The JSC also noted that these changes will expand the territorial and pecuniary jurisdiction of judicial officers, meaning they will now be able to handle cases of greater value and complexity.
This, the Commission said, is a crucial step in improving the Judiciary’s ability to manage the growing demands placed on it by the public.
The announcement comes just two months after the Commission revealed that thousands of Kenyans had expressed interest in joining the Judiciary. On Tuesday, July 15, the JSC confirmed that it had received 2,679 applications for 150 advertised positions.
These included opportunities for 20 High Court Judges, 15 Court of Appeal Judges, and 10 Judges for the Environment and Land Court.
The application window, which closed on July 7, attracted applicants from diverse legal backgrounds. In its earlier communication, the JSC reassured the public that the recruitment process would be conducted fairly and transparently.
“The public is assured that the recruitment process will follow the Constitution and all applicable laws. The JSC remains firmly committed to meritocracy, fairness, transparency, and integrity in all its operations,” the Commission said.
By promoting current officers and opening up more opportunities, the JSC has once again shown its determination to build a strong, efficient, and trusted Judiciary that works for all Kenyans.
