Chaos at Kasarani as Police Confront Gor Mahia Fans

Chaos at Kasarani as Police Confront Gor Mahia Fans

Tension erupted at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, on Sunday afternoon after police clashed with Gor Mahia supporters ahead of a Kenya Premier League opener.

The situation quickly turned chaotic as running battles broke out between the fans and police officers moments before Gor Mahia faced Bidco United in their first league game of the season.

According to eyewitness accounts, a large number of Gor Mahia fans attempted to force their way into the stadium without valid tickets.

Videos and photos obtained by Newshub.co.ke captured scenes of supporters dressed in the club’s trademark green jerseys climbing over fences at the outer gate in broad daylight.

Once inside the compound, the fans pushed towards the main entrance, where police officers were stationed. The officers attempted to block them from accessing the stands, but the confrontation quickly escalated.

To disperse the crowd, police lobbed several teargas canisters, sending smoke billowing through parts of the stadium. Panic followed as scores of fans ran in different directions for safety, while others engaged officers in running battles within the stadium grounds.

The exact reason behind the initial denial of entry remains unclear. However, early indications suggest that hundreds of supporters had turned up without tickets but were determined to watch their team play.

Ticket checks showed that regular entry passes for the game cost Ksh300, while VIP access was priced at Ksh1,000.

Gor Mahia supporters are often regarded as the most loyal and passionate fan base in Kenyan football.

However, their enthusiasm has frequently boiled over into unrest and confrontations with authorities. The incident at Kasarani adds to a growing list of disturbances linked to the club’s fan base in recent months.

For instance, in June, chaos broke out at the Ulinzi Sports Complex on June 29 when police were again forced to fire teargas to control unruly Gor Mahia fans. That violence came shortly after Nairobi United shocked the football fraternity by defeating the defending champions 2-1 to clinch the Mozzart Bet Cup.

Similarly, in May, another ugly scene unfolded at the Gusii Stadium before a league match between Gor Mahia and Shabana FC. A sudden stampede broke out in the stands, leaving several supporters injured as security personnel struggled to restore order.

Sunday’s clash at Kasarani came at a time when Gor Mahia supporters were eager to see their team’s performance in the new season.

Many of them were particularly keen to assess how the squad would respond after losing the Kenya Premier League title to Police FC in the 2024/2025 campaign.

For some fans, the match was more than just an opener—it was a chance to measure whether their team could reclaim its dominance in the league.
