Former Chief Justice David Kenani Maraga has officially declared his intention to run for President in the 2027 General Election, announcing that he will be seeking to succeed President William Ruto on the ticket of the United Green Movement (UGM) Party.
Maraga was formally unveiled at the party’s headquarters in Nairobi, where he received the party’s colours in an event attended by party officials and supporters. He said he would now begin popularising and strengthening the party across the country in preparation for the upcoming elections.
“I accepted the call to join this party because it reflects my personal values and beliefs on key issues such as the rule of law, respect for human rights, and democratic leadership,”
Maraga said at the Green Action House in Nairobi.
He added, “I am committed to restoring the dignity of Kenyans and safeguarding their freedoms.”
Party Roots and Maraga’s Growing Influence
The United Green Movement Party is linked to politician Neto Agostinho, who co-leads the party alongside other leaders.
Neto previously served as Member of Parliament for Ndhiwa Constituency after winning a by-election in 2012 on an ODM ticket, serving until 2017 before breaking away to form the UGM.
Maraga has already been actively involved in grassroots mobilisation, particularly targeting Gen Z voters, whom he has positioned himself to represent. He recently attended the launch of the UGM Kwale County office in June, signalling his growing presence in national politics.
The former CJ has vowed not only to capture the presidency but also to ensure that the party secures a majority of seats in Parliament and county assemblies in 2027.
Campaign Funding and Public Reactions
Maraga’s proposal to raise campaign funds from well-wishers and supporters has sparked mixed reactions among Kenyans.
He clarified that while he would contribute between Ksh1 million and Ksh2 million of his own money, the bulk of the campaign would be sustained through public goodwill and voluntary contributions, insisting on a clean and transparent campaign model.
Responding to Ruto: “My Words Were Misinterpreted”
Maraga also addressed recent remarks by President Ruto, who criticised him for allegedly describing Kenya as a “failed state.” Maraga insisted that his comments were taken out of context.
“The President twisted what I said. I did not claim that Kenya is a failed state. I said the country is sliding towards becoming one, especially based on what unfolded during the Gen Z protests,” he clarified.
He maintained that his remarks were made in good faith, reflecting genuine concern over police brutality, youth frustrations, and governance challenges.
