Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale is facing mounting criticism after he physically confronted a senior county officer during an official Senate visit. Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa is now demanding that Senate Speaker Amason Kingi take disciplinary action against the senator.
The incident occurred on Friday, October 3, when the Senate Devolution Committee was on an oversight mission in Kakamega County to check on stalled development projects. During the visit, Khalwale got into a heated dispute with Benjamin Andama, the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Finance.
A video shared by Khalwale on his social media pages captured the confrontation. In the footage, the senator can be heard accusing Andama of corruption and threatening to have him arrested.
Tensions escalated when Khalwale forcefully pushed Andama in the chest. Fellow senators quickly stepped in to calm the situation before it became more chaotic.
Following the clash, Governor Barasa issued a strong statement on Saturday, October 4, urging Speaker Kingi to begin immediate investigations into Khalwale’s conduct.
He also called on law enforcement to ensure Andama receives justice for what he described as an act of intimidation and assault.
“The behaviour displayed by Senator Khalwale was regrettable and unacceptable. We call upon law enforcement agencies to ensure justice for CECM Benjamin Andama,” Barasa said.
Barasa stressed that physical aggression, harassment, and disrespect toward county officials would not be tolerated. He emphasized that the officers serve the people of Kakamega with dedication and deserve to be treated with integrity.
He also condemned Khalwale’s remarks referring to CECMs and Chief Officers in Kakamega as “very junior people.” According to Governor Barasa, such comments undermine the dignity of public servants and go against the cooperative relationship expected between county governments and the Senate.
“We shall not condone violence, intimidation, or disrespect toward our officers. Statements that demean public officials also erode mutual respect and collaboration,” he added.
The governor insists that addressing Khalwale’s behaviour is necessary to preserve the credibility and constitutional mandate of the Senate in overseeing county governments.
