Kaluma Boy, the 17-year-old TikTok sensation who captured the nation’s attention for looking after his sick father, has officially been awarded a full university scholarship at the East African University.
The announcement was made on Sunday during a Thanksgiving Service at JCM Church in Ruiru by Bishop Ben Kamau, popularly known as Muthee Kiengei.
Kiengei revealed that Kaluma Boy would be pursuing a course in Sales and Marketing, with a strong focus on digital marketing to build on his existing online presence and talent.
He emphasized that the teenager should be the main beneficiary of the overwhelming public support and donations, noting that education was the next crucial step in changing his future.
“I want to announce that Kaluma Boy will be joining the university,” Kiengei said to a cheering congregation.
He went on to confirm that the Vice Chancellor of East African University, Dr. Christopher Mutembei, had personally approved the full scholarship offer.
“Kaluma Boy has been granted a full scholarship at East African University, and he will study Sales and Marketing to improve his digital marketing skills,” Kiengei reiterated with pride.
He also clarified that the church, through its patron, had reached out to secure the scholarship on Kaluma’s behalf but had not managed or touched any of the donations raised for the family.
The Thanksgiving Service came just a week after thousands of TikTokers, members of the Nduthi Culture Community, and many Kenyans of goodwill visited Kaluma’s home in Othaya, Nyeri, to meet and support his ailing father.
This visitation followed weeks of coordinated planning through TikTok Live sessions and comment sections. Kaluma’s touching videos showing his daily life, including farm work and caring for his father, moved Kenyans across social media, leading to widespread support.
To ensure Kaluma’s father could attend the church service in Ruiru safely, Kiengei provided his ambulance for transportation.
He also pledged to donate the ambulance to a new hospital project that TikTokers are fundraising to build, noting that public hospitals often fail to meet the needs of seriously ill Kenyans.
After helping Kaluma’s family, the TikTok community has already set sights on another cause—supporting Mama Gift, a TikToker whose child needs urgent treatment in India.
During the church gathering, Kiengei promised to lead the service during the group’s upcoming visit to Mama Gift in Embu. He assured the congregation that once the visit happens on Sunday, efforts will be made to ensure the family travels to India by Wednesday for Gift’s medical care.
This wave of compassion has showcased the power of social media communities coming together to transform lives in real and impactful ways.
