Land Acquisition to Support Water, Sewerage, and Road Infrastructure Development Across the Country
The National Land Commission (NLC) has announced plans to acquire multiple parcels of land in several counties, including Kiambu, Machakos, Kwale, and Kisumu, to pave the way for the implementation of vital national development projects.
These projects are aimed at expanding Kenya’s road network, improving water distribution, and strengthening sewerage systems in growing urban areas.
In an official notice, the NLC stated that the land acquisitions are part of ongoing efforts to support the Athi Water Works Development Agency (AWWDA) and the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) in delivering critical infrastructure to meet the needs of the public.
Kiambu County: Expansion of Karimenu II Dam Water Supply Project
In Kiambu County, the government plans to acquire land in the Chania and Mataara areas to complete the Karimenu II Dam Water Supply Project. This project is expected to play a key role in boosting the supply of clean water to Nairobi, Thika, and Juja, addressing the growing demand in these fast-expanding urban centres.
The NLC issued a correction notice on behalf of Athi Water Works Development Agency (AWWDA) to ensure that all affected parcels are accurately listed. Landowners along the project’s alignment have been requested to visit NLC offices to inspect project maps and verify their details.
They have also been advised to prepare necessary documentation, including title deeds, identification documents, and compensation claims, to ensure timely processing of payments.
Machakos County: Expansion of Sanitation and Sewerage Network
In Machakos County, the government is moving ahead with plans to acquire additional land for the Machakos Sanitation Project, a major initiative aimed at improving wastewater management and expanding sewer systems.
According to the NLC, this acquisition — also managed on behalf of AWWDA — will allow the construction of new sewer lines, wastewater treatment plants, and drainage systems to serve the county’s growing population.
The Commission has scheduled public hearings where affected property owners will be allowed to present their claims, submit supporting documents, and seek clarifications regarding compensation and valuation processes.
Kwale County: Construction of the Kwale–Kinango (B92) Road
In Kwale County, the NLC has also marked several parcels of land for the construction of the Kwale–Kinango (B92) Road, a project being implemented under the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA).
This infrastructure project aims to improve connectivity and transport efficiency within the coastal region, linking local communities to major trade routes and economic zones such as the Dongo Kundu Special Economic Zone and the Port of Mombasa.
Landowners in the Dumbule area have been notified to attend scheduled inquiry sessions later this month, where details of valuation, compensation, and property boundaries will be addressed.
Kisumu County: Reconstruction of Mamboleo–Miwani–Chemelil–Muhoroni–Kipsitet Road
In Kisumu County, the Commission revealed plans to acquire land for the reconstruction of the Mamboleo–Miwani–Chemelil–Muhoroni–Kipsitet (B132) Road.
The road is a vital economic link connecting the sugar belt region to Kisumu City, serving thousands of residents and businesses that depend on agriculture and trade. Once completed, the road will reduce travel time, lower transport costs, and make it easier for farmers to access markets and factories.
The NLC, acting on behalf of KeNHA, has listed multiple plots along the Mamboleo Junction to Miwani stretch as part of the affected zones. Public inquiries and compensation sessions will be held soon to guide residents through the process.
Next Steps and Compensation Procedure
The NLC has directed all affected landowners in the mentioned counties to submit written claims along with relevant documents — including proof of ownership, identification, and bank details — to facilitate smooth and transparent compensation.
Owners are also encouraged to regularly check NLC offices or local government notice boards for project updates, public hearing schedules, and payment timelines.
These large-scale acquisitions mark yet another step in the government’s broader plan to enhance national infrastructure, promote economic growth, and ensure equitable access to clean water, efficient sanitation, and reliable transport networks across the country.
